The Lobos are looking to avenge two road losses last week to Colorado State and Wyoming. Saturday’s game against UNLV will be “Pack The Pit”. Last season against UNLV the Lobos held “Pack The Pit” and 17,215 fans showed up.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS: The San Diego State Aztecs come into The Pit winless in conference games. The Aztecs did give BYU and Utah a run for their money last weekend but ended up dropping both games. UNLV split last weekend with BYU and Utah, defeating the Cougars of BYU.
STREAKING: San Diego State may lead the overall series against UNM but the Lobos have won nine of the last 10. UNM won all three contests last season and have defeated the Aztecs in the last two conference tournaments.
HOLDING HOME COURT: The last time New Mexico lost to San Diego State at home was on March 8, 1995. The Aztecs defeated the Lobos 57-39.
A MILE HIGH AND LOUDER THAN…: The Lobos begin their 12th season playing in one of the greatest home arenas in all of college basketball. UNM has an overall record of 124-64 (.659) in The Pit and are 49-31 in conference games (.612). Since Don Flanagan arrived on campus The Pit has welcomed the women’s basketball team with open arms. Since 1995, the Lobos are 110-26 (.808) overall and 43-9 (.826) in conference games.
SOPHOMORE SENSATION: Mandi Moore is making a name for herself in the MWC record books. She set the MWC sophomore record for assists in a game with 12 against Air Force and she continues to buildon her record-setting freshman performance from last season. Moore had a freshman record 146 assists last year and already has 112 this season with a minimum 12 games remaining. Moore only needs 14 more assists to set the single season MWC sophomore record.
POINT ONE: The Lobos have outscored their opponents 465-446 over the last seven games. During that stretch, the Tigers are 3-4. In those same seven games the Lobos were outrebounded 264-263.
GLAD THAT”S OVER: The Lobos dropped a pair of conference road games last week, falling at Colorado State and Wyoming. UNM’s loss at Wyoming was their first in four years. The last time the Lobos dropped a pair of conference games was at San Diego State and UNLV in 2000-01.
SEEING DOUBLE: Jordan Adams has had one double-double this year while Chelsea Grear has had two. Grear’s latest double effort was against New Mexico State as she had 20 points and 10 rebounds. Mandi Moore has now joined the club as she had 16 points and 12 assists against Air Force.
GLASS MENAGERIE: The Lobos have proved dominating on the boards this season. UNM has grabbed 115 more rebounds then their opponents, averaging 41.9 to 34.8. Against Memphis the Lobos grabbed a season-high 57 rebounds.
CENTURY CLUB: Two current Lobos have played in over 100 games during their careers. Jordan Adams has played in 110 games and Chelsea Grear has played in 107. Cristal Garcia is closing in on the century mark, having seen action in 89 games.
START IT UP: Mandi Moore is the only current Lobo to have started in every game for her career. Moore has started in 47 games over 2 years.
REJECTION! Jordan Adams has had at least one block in every game so far this year. The Lobos have 60 blocks on the season compared to their opponents 27. Seven UNM players have recorded one or more blocks. Adams had a season-high six rejections against Louisiana Tech on Dec. 21. and she leads the team with 34 total.
FAN SUPPORT: The Lobos posted their highest attendance of the year against Air Force with 13,350. UNM is now 4th nationally, averaging 9,610, their highest average in school history.SEASON ACCOLADES: Jordan Adams has been named the Mountain West Conference Player of the Week twice already this year. She’s the only Lobo so far to receive the honor.
FIVE FOR THE DRIVE: The Lobos are going for their fifth 20-win season this year. The Lobos have had all four of their 20-win seasons under head coach Don Flanagan with their best ever record of 26-7 coming in Flanagan’s third year, 1997-98.
SCORING DRIVE: The Lobos averaged 65.8 points per game last year and held their opponents to 57.0 ppg. This year, New Mexico is averaging 71.0 ppg and their opponents are at 58.9 Nine of UNM’s nine wins have them scoring 70 or more points.
LEADERS OF THE PACK: The Lobos currently are leading the conference in scoring offense (68 ppg) and turnover margin (+4.33). UNM also leads the conference in free throw percentage (82.1).
MANDI MOORE MINUTE MANIPULATOR: Mandi Moore led the team in minutes last season averaging 35.8. This season Moore has played the most minutes on the team at 573 minutes. Moore is the only player this year to play an entire game, she’s done it four times.
SIZE MATTERS: The Lobos have seven players on their roster that are 6’0 or taller. The starting five last season averaged 5’10.6. The three incoming freshman average 6’0.3. Jordan Adams and Jana Francis are the two tallest on the roster at 6’3.
D MINUS: The Lobos have ranked in the top-25 final NCAA statistics for defense since Coach Flanagan came on board. Last season the Lobos were ranked in field goal percentage defense and scoring defense. This season the Lobos have held their opponents to 36% from field goal range and only 58.9 points a game.
D-FENCE: UNM has outrebounded their opponent defensively in 10 games this year. Currently UNM has 451 defensive boards to their opponents 366. The Lobos are 1-2 when they have been outrebounded defensively and are 0-4 when they’ve been outrebounded
NOT BAD, FOR STARTERS: New Mexico returns four starters from the 2001-02 season (Mandi Moore, All-America candidate Jordan Adams, Lindsey Arndt and Chelsea Grear).
BENCH PLAYERS: The UNM bench has contributed 455 points and 243 rebounds this season. Every UNM player has seen action in over 10 games and Melissa Forest leads the Lobo bench with 131 points and 73 rebounds.AN MVP PERFORMANCE: Jordan Adams was given MVP honors for the Southwest Airlines Lobo Shootout. Chelsea Grear and Abbie Letz were both named to the All-Tournament Team. In UNM’s other home tournament, the Holiday Inn Mountain View Invitational, Melissa Forest was given MVP honors with Jordan Adams and Cristal Garcia chosen for the All-Tournament team.
WE LIKE THE COLOR RED: The Lobos will have two players redshirting this year. Jenny Shetters, a 6’4 transfer from Cal State Northridge will have two years of eligibility while 6’1 Fort Lewis College transfer Judy Vogt will give the Lobos three years.
2001-02 RECAP: The Lobos ended the 2001-02 season with a record of 22-9, 10-4 in the Mountain West Conference. The Lobos were eliminated in the second round of the MWC Tournament, 71-58 to BYU and in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, 58-44 to Notre Dame.
