The University of New Mexico takes to the road for their first conference road trip of the 2002-03 season. The Lobos have never won at Colorado State and are 4-14. UNM also sports a losing record while at Wyoming, 7-12. The Lobos are currently 1-0 in the MWC while both CSU and Wyoming were swept last weekend and are 0-2.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS: The Colorado State Rams started conference play at 0-2 for the first time since the 1992-93 season. CSU boasts the league’s longest home conference win streak at nine games and the Lobos have never won at Moby Arena. Senior Shannon Strecker leads the conference in field goal percentage and she has recorded double figures in scoring in four of the last five games. Wyoming had a four-game win streak snapped with a pair of losses last weekend. Senior Carrie Bacon scored 24 points against BYU and Utah and she leads the team in scoring at 13.1 ppg. The Cowgirls are third in the MWC with 35 rebounds per game and Carrie Bacon ranks among the league’s top 12.
IT BEGINS AT HOME: The home teams dominated in conference play last weekend, going 5-1. BYU and Utah remain the only two MWC teams unbeaten at home this season, posting 2-0 marks last weekend. UNLV was the only team to post a road win, defeating San Diego State at Cox Arena.
STARTING FIVE: The New Mexico starting five all scored in double-figures against Air Force, the first time since January 2001. The starters, which combined for 64% shooting over the Falcons, are producing 80% of UNM’s points this season.
MORE FOR MANDI: Mandi Moore recorded her first double-double of the season with 16 points and a career-high 12 assists against Air Force. Those 12 assists tied her for third all-time at UNM for most assists in a game and overall she is tied for sixth on the UNM charts with 253 career assists. Moore has racked up 104 dishes this season, 7.4 a game. She’s had eight games this season where she’s recorded eight or more assists.
CROSSING JORDAN: Jordan Adams tied her career-high of 30 points against Memphis and was one point shy of 30 against Weber State. Adams has now scored in double-figures in nine straight games. Adams also has led the team in scoring seven times. Last season she had a streak of 17 games scoring in double-digits.
SEEING DOUBLE: Jordan Adams has had one double-double this year while Chelsea Grear has had two. Grear’s latest double effort was against New Mexico State as she had 20 points and 10 rebounds. Mandi Moore has now joined the club as she had 16 points and 12 assists against Air Force.
GLASS MENAGERIE: The Lobos have proved dominating on the boards this season. UNM has grabbed 122 more rebounds then their opponents, averaging 43.1 to 34.4. Against Memphis the Lobos grabbed a season-high 57 rebounds.
CENTURY CLUB: Two current Lobos have played in over 100 games during their careers. Jordan Adams has played in 108 games and Chelsea Grear has played in 105. Cristal Garcia is closing in on the century mark, having seen action in 87 games.
FIRE STARTER: Mandi Moore is the only current Lobo to have started in every game for her career. Moore has started in 45 games over 2 years.
REJECTION! Jordan Adams has had at least one block in every game so far this year. The Lobos have 55 blocks on the season compared to their opponents 21. Seven UNM players have recorded one or more blocks. Adams had a season-high six rejections against Louisiana Tech on Dec. 21. and she leads the team with 30 total.
PICTURE PERFECT: Lindsey Arndt was perfect in every way against Air Force. She was 4-4 from field goal range, 1-1 from three-point land and 2-2 from the free throw line.
THAT’S THE WAY WE LIKE IT: The Lobos scored 93 points against Air Force for the first time since November of 2001 when UNM defeated UTEP 98-45.
SHOOTING THE LIGHTS OUT: The Lobos posted season bests for field goal and free-throw shooting against Air Force, hitting 56% (32-57) from field goal range and 85% (23-27) from the line.
FAN SUPPORT: The Lobos posted their highest attendance of the year against Air Force with 13,350. UNM is now 4th nationally, averaging 9,610, their highest average in school history.
SEASON ACCOLADES: Jordan Adams has been named the Mountain West Conference Player of the Week twice already this year. She’s the only Lobo so far to receive the honor.
FIVE FOR THE DRIVE: The Lobos are going for their fifth 20-win season this year. The Lobos have had all four of their 20-win seasons under head coach Don Flanagan with their best ever record of 26-7 coming in Flanagan’s third year, 1997-98.
SCORING DRIVE: The Lobos averaged 65.8 points per game last year and held their opponents to 57.0 ppg. This year, New Mexico is averaging 73.2 ppg and their opponents are at 57.5 Nine of UNM’s nine wins have them scoring 70 or more points.
MANDI MOORE MINUTE MANIPULATOR: Mandi Moore led the team in minutes last season averaging 32.5. This season Moore has played the most minutes on the team at 496 minutes, 35.4 mpg. Moore is the only player this year to play an entire game, she’s done it four times.
SIZE MATTERS: The Lobos have seven players on their roster that are 6’0 or taller. The starting five last season averaged 5’10.6. The three incoming freshman average 6’0.3. Jordan Adams and Jana Francis are the two tallest on the roster at 6’3.
D MINUS: The Lobos have ranked in the top-25 final NCAA statistics for defense since Coach Flanagan came on board. Last season the Lobos were ranked in field goal percentage defense and scoring defense. This season the Lobos have held their opponents to 35% from field goal range and only 57.5 points a game.
D-FENCE: UNM has outrebounded their opponent defensively in 10 games this year. Currently UNM has 410 defensive boards to their opponents 305.
NOT BAD, FOR STARTERS: New Mexico returns four starters from the 2001-02 season (Mandi Moore, Jordan Adams, Lindsey Arndt and Chelsea Grear).
AN MVP PERFORMANCE: Jordan Adams was given MVP honors for the Southwest Airlines Lobo Shootout. Chelsea Grear and Abbie Letz were both named to the All-Tournament Team. In UNM’s other home tournament, the Holiday Inn Mountain View Invitational, Melissa Forest was given MVP honors with Jordan Adams and Cristal Garcia chosen for the All-Tournament team.
WE LIKE THE COLOR RED: The Lobos will have two players redshirting this year. Jenny Shetters, a 6’4 transfer from Cal State Northridge will have two years of eligibility while 6’1 Fort Lewis College transfer Judy Vogt will give the Lobos three years.
2001-02 RECAP: The Lobos ended the 2001-02 season with a record of 22-9, 10-4 in the Mountain West Conference. The Lobos were eliminated in the second round of the MWC Tournament, 71-58 to BYU and in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, 58-44 to Notre Dame.
A MILE HIGH AND LOUDER THAN…: The Lobos begin their 12th season playing in one of the greatest home arenas in all of college basketball. UNM has an overall record of 124-64 (.659) in The Pit and are 49-31 in conference games (.612). Since Don Flanagan arrived on campus The Pit has welcomed the women’s basketball team with open arms. Since 1995, the Lobos are 110-26 (.808) overall and 43-9 (.826) in conference games.

TOP OF HER CLASS: Lobo senior, Jordan Adams has been chosen a nominee for the Senior CLASS Award. The award started last season and the first women’s honoree was Sue Bird. Ten finalists will be determined in early February. The names of the finalists will appear on an official ballot during March. The national winner will be determined by three different panels of voters; a fan balloting opportunity, a national media committee and a committee of Division I coaches. Adams was also named a pre-season All-America and will be considered for All-American status this year.
PRESEASON FAVORITES: Jordan Adams has been chosen to the MWC preseason all-conference team. A second team all-conference pick last year, the 6-3 Adams ranks sixth all-time at UNM with 1,270 points and is first all-time in blocks with 258.
POLL POSITION: The Lobos were picked to finish third by the media in the 2002-03 Mountain West Conference race.
