Albuquerque, N.M. – The University of New Mexico swimming and diving team lost a tough meet today, 130-104, to Utah at the Seidler Natatorium. The Utes dominated in almost all categories, yet UNM persevered and swept both diving events as well as clinched first in the 200 breast, with an impressive performace from junior Heather DiLuzio. The Lobos fall to 7-3, 5-3 in the MWC while the Utes improve to 8-7 overall.
Becca Barras was in tip-top condition today on the boards. She captured first in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events with scores of 262.57 and 272.47 respectively. Close behind was teammate Tracey Berghian who grabbed the second spot in both events. She scored a 257.85 on the 1-meter and 267.83 on the 3-meter. Both UNM divers finished more than 50 points ahead of the next competitor from Utah in each event.
UNM had several top swimming performances, headlined by Heather DiLuzio’s time of 2:26.49 in the 200 breast which gave her the first-place spot. Senior Myra Will was second in the 500 free with a time of 24.10, recording one of her top times in the event this season.
All-around swimmer Robyn Miller had two second-place finishes. She completed the 500 free just behind Ute Marta Stepanczuk with a time of 5:08.98 and was second in the 400 IM (4:33.19), the event she currently holds the school record in.
Other Lobos with strong second-place finishes, include Whitney Thomson in the 200 back (2:11.88), Heather Morsilli (2:35.97) in the 200 breast and Aimee Dunavant (2:10.04) in the 200 fly.
The Lobos will complete their home schedule Saturday, Jan. 25 when they take to the pool against in-state rival New Mexico State. Meet time is set for 1 p.m. at the Seidler Natatorium.
