Women’s Basketball: Lobos Earn First Ever Ranking

Albuquerque, N.M. — After beginning the season 8-1, the UNM women’s basketball team was finally rewarded for its efforts with a number 25 ranking in the latest ESPN/USA Today poll.

It is the first ever ranking for a UNM women’s basketball team.

The Lobos received 60 votes this week, one less than No. 24 Arizona, which UNM will face tomorrow, and 14 votes less than No. 23 BYU.

After two lopsided wins over Dartmouth College (69-43) and Memphis (78-42) in last week’s Southwest Airlines Lobo Shootout, the coaches that make up the voting pool apparently saw fit to give the Lobos a spot among the nation’s elite. The Lobos received 44 points in the AP poll Monday and are unofficially the No. 26 team in the nation.

After Wednesday’s game at Arizona, the Lobos return home to face 16th-ranked Louisiana Tech in The Pit Saturday.
