SCOUTING THE WILDCATS: Arizona is coming off an 84-65 loss to Ohio State. Shawntinice Polk did not start the game due to team violations but she still managed 17 points in 34 minutes. Polk is the team’s leading shooter and rebounder (18.8 ppg, 13.3 rpg). Against Ohio State, the Wildcats led at the half but 47 second half points by the Buckeyes shot them past Arizona for the victory.
DOUBLE-DOUBLE TOIL AND TROUBLE: Jordan Adams got her first double-double of the year, eighth of her career against Memphis. She racked up 30 points (tying her career-high) and had 10 boards.
DISHING IT OUT: Mandi Moore has racked up 70 dishes this season, 7.7 a game. She’s had six games this season where she’s recorded eight or more assists. Mandi is now in 10th place in UNM’s career list for her 216 assists.
BOARDING HOUSE: The Lobos have proved dominating on the boards this season. UNM has grabbed 173 more rebounds then their opponents, averaging 45.3 to 32.8. Against Memphis the Lobos grabbed a season-high 57 rebounds.
HOME SWEET HOME: The Lobos are currently on a eight game winning streak and seven of those wins have come at home. As the Lobos take on the Wildcats it will be only their second road trip of the year. The Lobos are 1-1 on the road this year.
SEEKING ASSIST-ANCE: The Lobos have dished out 74 (187-113) more assists than their opponents. The only game where the opponent had more assists than UNM was New Mexico’s lone loss to USC. Against their last opponents the Lobos held both under 10 assists while forcing them into more than 10 turnovers.
JUST ONE MORE: The Lobos need just one more win to tie their best start ever. UNM won nine straight in 1996-97.
THAT’S TWICE: Thanks to Jordan Adams’ 52-point weekend performance she was chosen the Mountain West Conference Player of the Week for the second straight week. Adams shot 67% for the two games (21-33) with 19 rebounds, eight assists and six blocks.
TAKE TWO: The Lobos seem to do most of their scoring in the second half. Currently UNM is scoring 117 more points than their opponents in the second half. The Lobos are averaging 74.6 ppg and holding their opponents to 55.1.
CRASHING THE BOARDS: The Lobos had their best rebounding game against the Memphis Tigers, grabbing a season-high 57. UNM had 20 offensive and a season-high 37 defensive boards.
BLOCK PARTY: Jordan Adams has had at least one block in every game so far this year. The Lobos have 38 blocks on the season compared to their opponents 13. Seven UNM players have recorded one or more blocks and two players have more than one. Adams had a season-high five rejections in the win over Texas and now has 20 on the season.
GOING FOR FIVE: The Lobos are going for their fifth 20-win season this year. The Lobos have had all four of their 20-win seasons under head coach Don Flanagan with their best ever record of 26-7 coming in Flanagan’s third year, 1997-98.
WE SCORE MORE THAN YOU DO: The Lobos averaged 65.8 points per game last year and held their opponents to 57.0 ppg. This year, New Mexico is averaging 74.6 ppg and their opponents are at 55.1. Six of UNM’s eight wins have them scoring 73 or more points.
GIVE ME A MINUTE: Mandi Moore led the team in minutes last season averaging 32.5. This season Moore has played the most minutes on the team at 307 minutes, 34.1 mpg. Moore is the only player this year to play an entire game, she’s done it twice.
SIZE MATTERS: The Lobos have seven players on their roster that are 6’0 or taller. The starting five last season averaged 5’10.6. The three incoming freshman average 6’0.3. Jordan Adams and Jana Francis are the two tallest on the roster at 6’3.
D MINUS: The Lobos have ranked in the top-25 final NCAA statistics for defense since Coach Flanagan came on board. Last season the Lobos were ranked in field goal percentage defense and scoring defense. This season the Lobos have held their opponents to 33% from field goal range and only 55.1 points a game.
D-FENCE: UNM has outrebounded their opponent defensively in all games this year. Currently UNM has 283 defensive boards to their opponents 193. The Lobos have outrebounded their opponents, 408-295.
NOT BAD, FOR STARTERS: New Mexico returns four starters from the 2001-02 season (Mandi Moore, Jordan Adams, Lindsey Arndt and Chelsea Grear).
RANKINGS, SCHMANKINGS: The Lobos will face two ranked opponents this week in Arizona and Louisiana Tech. The Lobos are 1-0 this year against ranked opponents and are 3-3 in the last two years. UNM defeated Texas earlier this season, 77-70. UNM has never been ranked in either of the national polls.
AN MVP PERFORMANCE: Jordan Adams was given MVP honors for the Southwest Airlines Lobo Shootout. Chelsea Grear and Abbie Letz were both named to the All-Tournament Team. In UNM’s other home tournament, the Holiday Inn Mountain View Invitational, Melissa Forest was given MVP honors with Jordan Adams and Cristal Garcia chosen for the All-Tournament team1
