The Lobos and the Big Green are set for their first-ever match-up this weekend in the first round of the Southwest Airlines Lobo Shootout. The Lobos have been hosting the Shootout going on nine years and have won the tournament five times.

SCOUTING THE BIG GREEN: The Dartmouth Big Green come to Albuquerque after a 10-day layoff. The Big Green last played on Dec. 4 defeating Hartford 86-72. In that game Dartmouth set a school record with 12 3-pointers and tied a school record, going 16-16 from the free throw line. The Big Green are being led by Katharine Hanks (26.4 ppg, 10.6 rpg).
OH MANDI: Mandi Moore has racked up 54 dishes, 7.7 a game. Currently she’s leading the conference in assists and has a 1.86 assist-to-turnover ratio. She’s had four games this season where she’s recorded nine assists.
GLASS MENAGERIE: The Lobos have proved dominating on the boards this season. UNM has grabbed 79 more rebounds then their opponents, averaging 42.7 to 32.3.
HOME SWEET HOME: The Lobos are currently on a six game winning streak and five of those wins have come at home. UNM will take to the road on Dec. 18th for only the second time this year. Through five home games, UNM is averaging 9,120 and all home games have had over 8,000 fans in attendance.
SEEKING ASSIST-ANCE: The Lobos have dished out 43 (140-97) more assists than their opponents. The only game where the opponent had more assists than UNM was New Mexico’s lone loss to USC.
WE’LL TAKE THAT: The Lobos have grabbed 136 more rebounds then the Big Green. Dartmouth is averaging 33.2 rpg (120) and UNM is averaging 43.1 rpg (302).
EVEN STEVEN: To look at the Lobos and the Big Green on paper the two teams are pretty evenly matched. UNM has blocked 27 shots while Dartmouth has 19, UNM has 48 steals to Dartmouth’s 51, the Lobos are shooting 47% from field goal range and Dartmouth is at 42%.
TAKE TWO: The Lobos seem to do most of their scoring in the second half, as does the Big Green. Currently UNM is scoring 232 points in the first half and 292 in the second. Dartmouth is scoring 177 in the first half and 208 in the second. UNM is outscoring the Big Green by 84 points in the second half.
TAKING THE LEAD: Dartmouth’s scoring leader, Katharine Hanks is averaging 26. 4ppg and has 132 points, conversely UNM’s scoring leader, Jordan Adams is averaging 14.0 ppg and has scored 98 points.
BLOCK PARTY: Jordan Adams has had at least one block in every game so far this year. The Lobos have 27 blocks on the season compared to their opponents eight. Seven UNM players have recorded one or more blocks and two players have more than one. Adams had a season-high five rejections in the win over Texas.
THE SOUTWEST AIRLINES LOBO SHOOTOUT: This will be the ninth year for the Southwest Airlines Lobo Shootout. The Lobos have won the tournament five times, including last seasons 71-40 defeat of Central Michigan. Several UNM players hold records in the shootout. Abby Garchek attempted the most field goals in 1997, Garchek was one of three players to have the best field goal percentage in 1997, Stella Candelaria attempted the most three-point field goals in 1995 and Jordan Adams has recorded the most blocked shots in the Shootout.
65’S NOTHING: The Lobos averaged 65.8 points per game last year and held their opponents to 57.0 ppg. This year, New Mexico is averaging 74.9 ppg and their opponents are at 58.7. Five of UNM’s six wins have them scoring 73 or more points.
OVER 50: The Lobos have six players that are currently shooting over 50% from field goal range. Jordan Adams is shooting .528 (38-72), Chelsea Grear is shooting .593 (32-54), Melissa Forest is shooting .530 (35-66), Mandi Moore is shooting .511 (23-45), Lauren McLeod is shooting .500 (10-20) and Tiffany Scaglione is shootin g.500 (7-14). As a team the Lobos are shooting 47% to their opponents 36%.
GIVE ME A MINUTE: Mandi Moore led the team in minutes last season averaging 32.5. This season Moore has played the most minutes on the team at 206 minutes, 34.3 mpg. Moore is the only player this year to play an entire game as she’s done it in two games.
SIZE MATTERS: The Lobos have seven players on their roster that are 6’0 or taller. The starting five last season averaged 5’10.6. The three incoming freshman average 6’0.3. Jordan Adams and Jana Francis are the two tallest on the roster at 6’3.
D MINUS: The Lobos have ranked in the top-25 final NCAA statistics for defense since Coach Flanagan came on board. Last season the Lobos were ranked in field goal percentage defense and scoring defense. This season the Lobos have held their opponents to 36% from field goal range and only 60.3 points a game.
D-FENCE: UNM has outrebounded their opponent defensively in all games this year. Currently UNM has 175 defensive boards to their opponents 125. The Lobos have outrebounded their opponents, 256-194.
NOT BAD, FOR STARTERS: New Mexico returns four starters from the 2001-02 season (Mandi Moore, Jordan Adams, Lindsey Arndt and Chelsea Grear).
A MILE HIGH AND LOUDER THAN…: The Lobos begin their 12th season playing in one of the greatest home arenas in all of college basketball. UNM has an overall record of 171-110 (.643) in The Pit and 42-31 in conference games .607). Since Don Flanagan arrived on campus The Pit has welcomed the women’s basketball team with open arms. Since 1995, the Lobos are 119-96 (.806) overall and 42-9 (.823) in conference games.
TOP OF HER CLASS: Lobo senior, Jordan Adams has been chosen a nominee for the Senior CLASS Award. The award started last season and the first women’s honoree was Sue Bird. Ten finalists will be determined in early February. The names of the finalists will appear on an official ballot during March. The national winner will be determined by three different panels of voters; a fan balloting opportunity, a national media committee and a committee of Division I coaches.
WATCHING JORDAN: Jordan Adams became the sixth player in UNM history to score 1,000 points last season and she has already moved into fifth place on the chart. Adams is already the women’s all-time shot blocker but she is also looking to become the school’s all-time shot blocker, surpassing Luc Longley of the men’s team.

PRESEASON FAVORITES: Jordan Adams has been chosen to the MWC preseason all-conference team. A second team all-conference pick last year, the 6-3 Adams ranks sixth all-time at UNM with 1,270 points and is first all-time in blocks with 258.

2001-02 RECAP The Lobos ended the 2001-02 season with a record of 22-9, 10-4 in the Mountain West Conference. The Lobos were eliminated in the second round of the MWC Tournament, 71-58 to BYU and in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, 58-44 to Notre Dame.
WE LIKE THE COLOR RED: The Lobos will have two players redshirting this year. Jenny Shetters, a 6’4 transfer from Cal State Northridge will have two years of eligibility while 6’1 Fort Lewis College transfer Judy Vogt will give the Lobos three years.
