COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – University of New Mexico freshman running back DonTrell Moore and junior linebacker Billy Strother were named Mountain West Conference Players of the Week this morning following last weekend’s 49-20 victory over Wyoming. Moore and UNLV’s Larry Croom shared Offensive Player of the Week, Strother took Defensive honors and the Rebels’ Dillon Pieffer received Special Teams recognition. Moore earned the league’s weekly award for the first time in his career while Strother was honored for the second time this season.

New Mexico had five different players named Athlete of the Week this year. The Lobos have garnered the defensive award three times, the offensive award twice and earned special teams recognition once.

MWC Co-Offensive Player of the WeekDonTrell Moore, New Mexico, RB, Freshman

Redshirt freshman DonTrell Moore rushed 28 times for 176 yards and tied a school record by scoring five touchdowns in New Mexico’s win over Wyoming. Moore scored on runs of 1, 7 and 35 yards, and caught 9- and 12-yard scoring passes from Casey Kelly. Moore set a UNM freshman single-season rushing record with 1,117 yards, which also ranks third all-time at New Mexico. He became the first Lobo in six years to surpass 1,000 yards. With the win, UNM secured its second bowl appearance in 41 years.

MWC Defensive Player of the WeekBilly Strother, New Mexico, LB, Junior

With New Mexico needing a win in its final game to become bowl eligible, junior linebacker Billy Strother finished with a career-high 12 tackles in leading UNM to victory. Strother recorded a career-high three of the Lobo’s school record-tying nine sacks in the game for minus 18 yards.
