(on UNM’s injured players): “I don’t think we lost anybody in the (Colorado State) game that won’t play this week. How long they last will be determined as we play.”
(on UNM not looking past Wyoming): “I think part of the reason that we’ve had success over the last few weeks is that we’ve approached every week the same way. And to be honest with you, this game’s no more important than it was to pull one out against Utah, or to pull one out against San Diego State or to pull one out against BYU. If we hadn’t done those things against them, we wouldn’t be here right now.”
(on what Wyoming’s mindset might be): “It’s hard to tell. I’ve been on two staffs that have been fired with games yet to be played, and one of the teams didn’t want to play and we were horrible the last three games, and the other team did want to play and we won three in a row against people we were not supposed to beat. Someone brought up that (former UNM coach) Mike Sheppard, the whole time he was here he didn’t win a game on the road, and as soon as he was fired, he won on the road.”
(on Wyoming’s offense): “They’re averaging right at 400 yards a game. They throw it really well because they’ve got a great quarterback and five exceptional receivers. They do make an effort to run it, though. But they’ve moved the ball on everybody and they’ve scored points on everybody and so you always have the fear that, when they have two weeks to get ready for you, and now they’re just playing for the fun of playing, that you might see a bunch of new formations or trick plays.”
(on UNM’s senior class): “I think that this senior class, though small in size, has been more resilient than some in the past. I thought last year’s senior class was a good one, and this year is kind of keeping the tradition going. Desmar Black wasn’t a starter, and he’s been our starting corner the last five, six weeks. And Brandon Gregory wasn’t our starting corner, but he’s started for about the last four weeks. Those are two seniors that could have taken the wrong approach to not playing very much.”
on what a bowl game would mean to the UNM program): “Going to a bowl game helps your program so much more than just the publicity of it and the money you make from it. It’s a reward for the players, but the effect that going to a bowl game has on the program as a whole, you can’t put a price tag on it. Bowl teams have the advantage of becoming bowl teams again, and again and again.
