Fullerton, Calif. – The University of New Mexico had to work for the victory but with determination and the crashing of the boards, the Lobos defeated the Cal State Fullerton Titans, 80-55 Chelsea Grear had a career-high 26 points to lead all scorers.

A sudden spurt at the end of the first half put the University of New Mexico Lobos up 34-31 at the break but the Lobos had to play catch-up for most of the half. UNM started the game off quickly, scoring seven points to the Cal State Fullerton Titans two. But Fullerton charged back. The Titans called a timeout at the 14:25 mark with the score in the Lobos favor, 13-4. Fullerton would then go on an 11-0 run to take a 17-14 lead at 7:42. The Titans would lead by as much as eight with 3:24 to go. UNM, behind the playing of senior Chelsea Grear, cut the lead to two with 2:17 to go and then took the lead off shots by Melissa Forest and Tiffany Scaglione.

Grear led all scorers at the half-way mark with 15 points and was a perfect 2-2 from the three-point line. The Lobos shot only 39% from the field, going 3-9 from the three point line. The Titans outrebounded the Lobos 18-16 and both teams had 11 turnovers apiece.

The second half had the Lobos continuing to go strong to the basket, dominating the Titans on both ends of the floor. Fullerton would get no closer than points at the mark. UNM outshot and outrebounded the Titans. Grear was a perfect 3-3 from the three point line and was 7-11 from the line. Along with her 26 points, Grear also grabbed four rebounds. Jordan Adams chipped in 13 points and led the team with seven rebounds and three blocks. Tiffany Scaglione tied her career-high nine points and grabbed six rebounds.

The Lobos finished the game shooting 41% from the field and grabbed 46 boards, compared to Fullerton’s 36% shooting and 36 boards.

Next up for New Mexico is the Mountain View Holiday Invitational, the first home games for the Lobos.
