The University of New Mexico women’s basketball team is ready to begin their 2002-03 campaign. The Lobos will be playing the Houston Flight in their first exhibition game of the season.

GAME NOTESMADNESS: The Lobos have made five consecutive postseason appearances and last year made their second trip to the NCAA Tournament.
NOT BAD, FOR STARTERS: New Mexico returns four starters from the 2001-02 season (Mandi Moore, Jordan Adams, Lindsey Arndt and Chelsea Grear).
FOUR IN ALL: The University of New Mexico womens basketball program has had four head coaching in the 24 years of the program. Don Flanagan is the fourth coach and he follows Maureen Eckroth, Doug Hoselton and Kathy Marpe.
OPEN AND SHUT: In the past seven seasons, the Lobos have gone 5-2 in their regular-season openers, 2-1 on the road and 3-1 at home.

2001-02 RECAP The Lobos ended the 2001-02 season with a record of 22-9, 10-4 in the Mountain West Conference. The Lobos were eliminated in the second round of the MWC Tournament, 71-58 to BYU and in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, 58-44 to Notre Dame.
PREDICTIONS: The Lobos were picked to finish third by the media in the 2002-03 Mountain West Conference race.

PRESEASON FAVORITES: Jordan Adams has been chosen to the MWC preseason all-conference team. A second team all-conference pick last year, the 6-3 Adams ranks sixth all-time at UNM with 1,270 points and is first all-time in blocks with 258.
A MILE HIGH AND LOUDER THAN…: The Lobos begin their 12th season playing in one of the greatest home arenas in all of college basketball. UNM has an overall record of 171-110 (.643) in The Pit and 42-31 in conference games .607). Since Don Flanagan arrived on campus The Pit has welcomed the womens basketball team with open arms. Since 1995, the Lobos are 119-96 (.806) overall and 42-9 (.823) in conference games.
VERY SOPHOMORIC: Sophomore guard Mandi Moore looks to pick up where she left off from last season. Moore was chosen the Mountain West Conference Newcomer of the Year for 2001-02. She was third on the team in scoring (9.4 ppg, 291 pts.) and was the team and conference leader in assists (4.7 apg, 146 assists).

SIZE MATTERS: The Lobos have seven players on their roster that are 60 or taller. The starting five last season averaged 510.6. The three incoming freshman average 60.3. Jordan Adams and Jana Francis are the two tallest on the roster at 63.
PACK YOUR BAGS: Eight of UNMs opponents this season all made it into the postseason last year. USC was the only team in the WNIT while the other seven were in the Big Dance the NCAA Tournament. Three of UNMs Mountain West Conference opponents lost in the first round while BYU made it to the Sweet round of 16.
WERE VERY HONORED: Four UNM players were given all-conference honors last season. Jordan Adams was second-team, Chelsea Grear and Linsey Arndt were honorable mention and Mandi Moore was not only the conference newcomer of the year but she was also chosen third-team.
MINUTE MAN: Mandi Moore led the team in minutes last season averaging 32.5. Lindsey Arndt was the only Lobo to play at least 40 minutes in a game against Arizona.
ADAMS FAMILY: The duo of Jordan Adams and Daja Adams resulted in 105 blocked shots last season. Adams is UNMs leading shot blocker for the women and needs only 79 more to become the schools all-time leader.
WE LIKE THE COLOR RED: The Lobos will have two players redshirting this year. Jenny Shetters, a 64 transfer from Cal State Northridge and will have two years of eligibility while 61 Fort Lewis College transfer Judy Vogt will give the Lobos three years.

D MINUS: The Lobos have ranked in the top-25 final NCAA statistics for defense since Coach Flanagan came on board. Last season the Lobos tied for their best finish ever with 12th place in field goal percentage defense. Scoring defense has also been a category the Lobos have ranked in every year, finishing 10th in the country last season.
OH MANDI: Mandi Moore led the conference in assists last season. Moore is the first UNM player since Nikki Heckroth to lead the conference in that category.
NCAA RECAP: In the first round of the Midwest Region, UNM met up with defending national champion Notre Dame at Thompson-Boling Arena on the campus of the University of Tennessee.The Lobos, seeded 10th, went almost 15 minutes without a field goal as they lost to seventh-seeded Notre Dame, 58-44. UNM scored a record-low 11 points in the second half an NCAA mark for the first and second rounds. New Mexico finished the first half with a 33-30 lead and looked primed to upset the defending national champs.UNM kept that three-point margin at the 15:10 mark of the second on a jumper by Mandi Moore. The Lobos then went stone cold. The Lobos missed 18 straight shots from the field from that point and hit only four of 24 shots in the second half for 17%.Melissa Forest went 5 of 7 from the field 2-2 on 3-pointers to lead UNM with 12 points.
