UPCOMING GAMES: The 22nd-ranked Lobos (15-2-0, 5-0-0 MPSF) finish up a grueling three-game road trip to end the 2002 regular season at UNLV on Sunday, November 10 at 12:00 p.m. (M.S.T.). This game will solidfy the final seedings for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Men’s Soccer Championships next week in Albuquerque. The Lobos have already clichned the top spot in the tournament and with the win would clinch the outright regular season MPSF title.

Lobos In the Rankings: The Lobos are ranked No. 22 in the latest National Soccer Coaches’ Association of America Top-25 poll. This is the first time the Lobos have been ranked by the NSCAA, one of the two major national polls (Soccer America being the other). The Lobos have also moved up in the CollegeSoccerNews.com Top-30 rankings this week to No. 27, their highest ranking this season. The Lobos also moved up in the NSCAA Midwest Region ranking to No. 2, their highest regional ranking in school history.
Previous Rankings: The Lobos have only been ranked in two previous season. In 1992, UNM climbed as high as No. 17 in the Soccer America Poll for the week of October 20, 1992. In 1997 the Lobos earned their highest ranking in any poll when they reached No. 15 in the Soccer America Top-20 for the week of November 3, 1997. The No. 15 ranking was the last time UNM earned a spot in any poll.
Long Time Coming: The Lobos ended a four game slide against San Jose State with their 1-0 overtime win on Sunday. The last time UNM defeated the Spartans was a 2-1 overtime win in Albuquerque on September 17, 1995.
Top Seed Clinched: The Lobos two wins this weekend clinched the top seed in the MPSF Tournament, beginning on November 14 at the UNM Soccer Complex. The Lobos will play on Friday, November 15 at 6:30 p.m. against the winner of the No. 4 vs. No. 5 game that takes place on Friday.
NCAA Rankings: The Lobos are tied for the most win in the NCAA (15) with No. 8 Wisconsin-Milwaukee and No. 10 Coastal Carolina and their .882 winning percentage is third in the nation. Sophomore goalkeeper Andrew Weber ranks 16th in the country with a 0.76 goals-against-average while the Lobos’ team defense (0.75 g.a.a.) is ranked 14th in the NCAA Division I.
On The Mend: Senior Javier Carrasco suffered an injury in the Lobos 2-1 win over Sacramento State on Friday. He did not play against San Jose State on Sunday and is listed as day to day for the game against UNLV. The injury snapped Carrasco’s 41 game starting streak.
Leading The Way: Ben Ashwill still leads the MPSF in goals scored (10). As a team, the Lobos lead the conference in goals scored (38), goals-per-game (2.24), and G.A.A. (0.75).
Streaky: UNM started the 2002 season with eight-straight wins, the best ever in school history. After dropping two straight games the Lobos are now back on a seven-game winning streak. Their longest win-streak is nine games and took place in the 1992 season.
Weber Moves up the All-Time Shutout List: Sophomore Andrew Weber recorded his sixth shutout of the season with the 1-0 win over San Jose State on Sunday, November 3. He now has 11 career shutouts and is all alone in fourth place on UNM’s all-time shutout list. The career mark is held by Greg Hess (‘97) who scored 15 shutouts from 1994-1997.
Iron Men: The Lobos have two players who have played every minute in 2002, including sophomore Danny Bills and freshmen Brandon Moss.
Most Wins in School History: With their 1-0 win over San Jose State on Sunday, the Lobos set a new single-season win mark with 15. They had notched 14 wins in two previous season, 1994 (14-6-0) and 1992 (14-4-1).
Bills Gets National Recognition: Sophomore Danny Bills was named to the CollegeSoccerNews.com National Team of the Week for the week ending November 3, 2002. He joins freshman Ben Ashwill as the only two Lobos named to the National team this season.
MPSF Tickets On Sale: Tickets for the 2002 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Men’s Soccer Tournament are now on sale. The tournament takes place on November 14, 15, &17 at the UNM Soccer Complex. The top six teams in the MPSF qualify with the first and second seeds receiving first round byes. Game times for Thursday and Friday are 4:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. (M.S.T.) with the championship game on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. (M.S.T.). Price are $12 All-Session Adult, $8 All-Session Student/Youth, $6 Single-Session Adult, $4 Single-Session Youth, and $3 Single-Session group of 20 or more.
