Albuquerque, N.M. — Fans tore down the goalposts at the north end of University Stadium Saturday, as the New Mexico Lobos earned their second conference win of the season in a 42-35 double overtime victory over Utah.
UNM scored the only points of the second half, a 1-yard touchdown run by quarterback Casey Kelly, to tie the game at 28 at the end of regulation. Utah had a chance to win the game on a 53-yard field goal attempt with three seconds remaining, but the kick failed.
In the first overtime, each team scored a touchdown, as Utah won the coin toss and elected to go on the offensive first. UNM followed with a touchdown on a 19-yard Kelly scamper.
Then in the second overtime, the Lobos won the toss and brought their offense on the field.
Justin Millea scored on a touchdown from the half yard line to put the Lobos up 42-35 after Kenny Byrd’s extra point. The stout UNM defense then held the Utah offense to gain the victory.
