Lobos In the Rankings: The Lobos are creeping back into the CollegeSoccerNews.com Top-30 rankings this week. They are listed in the others receiving votes section. Their highest ranking this season was No. 28 for the weeks of September 16 and September 30. The Lobos also held their spot at No. 5 in the NSCAA Midwest Region Poll.
Previous Rankings: The Lobos have only been ranked in two previous season. In 1992, UNM climbed as high as No. 17 in the Soccer America Poll for the week of October 20, 1992. In 1997 the Lobos earned their highest ranking in any poll when they reached No. 15 in the Soccer America Top-20 for the week of November 3, 1997. The No. 15 ranking was the last time UNM earned a spot in any poll.
Long Time Coming: The Lobos have not beaten Air Force or Denver in a combined 10 games. The last time UNM took down the Pioneers was a 3-0 win on September 29, 1995 in Colorado Springs, Colo. It has been over seven years since UNM beat No. 23 Air Force, 4-2, on September 15, 1995. That win came on Robertson Field, the former home of the Lobos. The Lobos have never beaten Air Force in the UNM Soccer Complex and the seven straight losses mark the longest current streak New Mexico has against any other team.
3rd Most Wins: The Lobos 11 wins are tied for third most in the NCAA. Their .846 winning percentage is ranked No. 7 in NCAA Division I.
On the Mend: Two Lobo starters did not play on Sunday due to injuries. Junior Micah Newman sat out due to an injured toe while freshman Matt Chavez was recovering from a pulled thigh muscle. Both are expected to play this weekend.
Leading the Way: The Lobos hold the lead atop the MPSF standings and in several statistical categories. UNM leads in goals-per-game with a 2.23 average and has allowed the fewest goals this season (11). The Lobos also play the best team defense in the league, allowing just 0.820 goals per game. Ben Ashwill holds the lead in goals scored (9). Andrew Weber leads the conference in goals-against-average with a 0.84 mark.
Best Start: UNM started the 2002 season with eight-straight wins, the best ever in school history. Their longest win-streak is nine games and took place in the 1992 season.
Weber Moves Up the All-Time Shutout List: Sophomore Andrew Weber recorded his fourth shutout of the season with the 1-0 win over UC-Colorado Springs on Sunday, October 6. He now has nine career shutouts and is all alone in fourth place on UNMs all-time shutout list. The career mark is held by Greg Hess (97) who scored 15 shutouts from 1994-1997.
Iron Men: The Lobos have two players who have played every minute in 2002, including sophomore Danny Bills and freshmen Brandon Moss.
Goals Galore: In 2001 the Lobos scored 27 goals in 21 games, just 1.20 goals-per-game. Through thirteen games this season the Lobos have scored 29 goals, averaging 2.23 goals-per-game.
11 wins: The Lobos 11 wins are the most for a UNM team since 1997 when New Mexico posted a 13-7-0 record. UNM needs three more wins to tie the schools all-time record for wins in a season. UNM won 14 games on two previous occasions, 1994 (14-6-0) and 1992 (14-4-1). Ashwill Approaching 10: Freshman Ben Ashwill needs just one more goal to reach double figures in that category for the 2002 season. When he accomplishes this feat, he will be the first Lobo to score ten or more goals in a season since 1997 when Justin Sells recorded 16 goals.
