COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The Mountain West Conference announced this morning that University of New Mexico senior quarterback Justin Millea has been named its Offensive Player of Week. Millea is the third Lobo to earn Player of the Week honors this season and the first New Mexico quarterback honored by the league since Sean Stein picked up the award following the 1999 season-finale.
Making his first career start, Millea led New Mexico to a 25-16 win over UNLV. The former walk-on from Silver City, N.M. received the starting nod three days before kickoff following an injury to starter Casey Kelly and the one-game suspension of back-up Kole McKamey. Millea ran 20 times for 148 yards and completed two of eight passes for 20 more. His 73-yard scoring run staked the Lobos to a 21-10 third quarter lead. Millea helped UNM get on the board by engineering a season-long 10-play, 90-yard touchdown drive in the second quarter. His rushing output was the highest by a Lobo quarterback in 29 years, while his touchdown run was the longest by a UNM player since 1997.
New Mexico is one of four Mountain West schools to earn Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Player of the Week honors this season. Seniors Dwight Counter (Sep. 2) and Charles Moss (Sep. 9) were named conference special teams and defensive Players of the Week, respectively, earlier this season. !
