Pacific Palisades, Calif – UNM women’s tennis player Tjasa Suvak (Belca, Slovenia) was victorious in her first round match of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships today. The win advanced Suvak to the second round where she was successful yet again. The junior will play in the qualifying round of the championships tomorrow.
In her first match of the day, Suvak played three sets before beating Mhairi Brown of Arizona State 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. The second round told a similar story for Suvak as she was able to get by Tulane’s Julie Smekodub 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.
Suvak faces Catherine Lynch of California tomorrow in the qualifying round.
The Riviera Women’s All-American Championship dates back to 1983 and is one of three national collegiate tennis championships this season. It is considered the premier hard court event of the fall collegiate season and features the top players in NCAA Division 1 tennis. New Mexico’s Suvak qualified for the event based on her 2002 regional ranking of sixth.
