ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico men’s soccer team survived a tough outing today with Division II UC-Colorado Springs. The Lobos(9-2-0) needed two extra periods to break a scoreless tie with the Mountain Lions (3-7-0) and get the, 1-0, win. Freshman Lance Watson put away the rebound from a bullet off the foot of freshman Ricky Francis in the 107th minute of play to break the Lobos’ two-game losing streak.
The Lobos had not taken more the 13 shots in their last three games and against UC Irvine were out-shot for the first time this season. This wasnot the case this afternoon as New Mexico fired a season-high 31 shots at the Mountain Lion defense. The problem was UNM had trouble finding the back of the net. Three times in the first half UNM had clean looks at an open goal and couldn’t get the ball in.
After the first ten-minute overtime period, the Lobo crowd of just over 1,000 got a little anxious, wondering if the Lobos were going to be able to pull this one out. In the 107th minute, Francis and Watson helped to ease their worries and avoid a major upset. Colorado Springs was whistled for a foul just outside of the box on the right side. Francis lined-up a directkick and booted a rocket that bounced off the far post. Watson was in the right place at the right time and calmly put the rebound back in for hisfourth goal, and third game-winner, of the season.
Lobo goalkeeper Andrew Weber earned his fourth shutout of the season with the 1-0 win. The sophomore now has nine career shutouts, moving him into sole possession of fourth place on UNMs all-time list. Weber had a game-saving stop early in the match when Mountain Lion Chaz Woodson broke free, creating a one-on-one situation. However, Woodson came up short asWeber made one of his three saves on the afternoon.
UNM next travels to Colorado Springs, Colo. to face Drury on October 13 at 1:00 p.m. (M.D.T.). The Lobos’ next home match is the conference opener on Sunday, October 20, at 2:00 p.m. (M.D.T.) against San Diego State.
