Boulder, Colo.- The University of New Mexico women’s tennis team finished up its second day at the Colorado Fall Invite with four singles and one doubles win. The biggest win of the day came in the finals of Flight 2 when freshman Maja Kovacek (Pula, Croatia) defeated Katherine Anne Lutgert of CU 2-6, 7-5, 6-2.
Earlier today in Flight 1 semi-final action, Tjasa Suvak (Belca Slovenia) matched up against Carla Pallares and defeated the CSU player 6-0, 6-2. Suvak went on to play in the finals against Lu Oswald of BYU, but was defeated in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.
In the consolation round of Flight 1, Lobo sophomore Michelle Heidbrink (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) defeated Jenny Trettin (Denver) 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. Also in consolation play of Flight 2, Stephanie Ginsburg of Denver beat UNM’s Tiffany Robertson (Blenheim, NZ) 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.
In Flight 3 play, Jessica Jones of Colorado State defeated New Mexico’s Maria Ruiz-Fabrega (Albuquerque, N.M.), although the score is unknown at this time. Ruiz-Fabrega went on to beat Susan Johnson (CU) in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 in her next match of the day.
Rachel Hatley (Burleson, Texas) played in the fourth flight of singles today. The senior defeated Hadley MacFarlane (BYU) solidly in two sets 6-2, 6-4. In her second match Hatley was defeated by Tara Porter in two close sets, 7-6, 7-6.
The only doubles match of the day for UNM featured Tiffany Robertson and Michelle Heidbrink against Trettin and Ginsburg of Denver. The Lobo duo was victorious, 8-3.
