Lakewood, Colo-The University of New Mexico women’s tennis team finished up the first day of the Colorado Invite in a winning fashion with two singles victories and a doubles win. Although rainy conditions threatened to postpone the tournament completely, a venue change from the CU campus in Boulder to the Meadowcreek Tennis Courts in Lakewood, allowed a large portion of the competition to continue.

In the first singles flight of the day, UNM’s Michelle Heidbrink faced CU’s Dominique Lemperle and was defeated in a close 6-7, 7-5, 7-6 match. The second match of the day also came as a disappointing loss as Lobo Tiffany Robertson was defeated by Katherine Anne Lutgert of CU 6-0, 6-4.

New Mexico’s first win of the day came in the second singles flight when Lobo freshman Maja Kovacek defeated Denver’s Barb Kourim handily in a 6-2, 7-5 match.

UNM would get a second win under its belt after Rachel Hatley beat Hadley MacFarlane of BYU in another solid Lobo match, 6-2, 6-4.

The only doubles match of the day for New Mexico featured Tjasa Suvak and Maja Kovacek against host Colorado’s Lauren Carey and Susan Johnson. Suvak and Kovacek put away the CU opponents 8-3.
