Fullerton, Calif. – The University of New Mexico mens soccer team was handed their first set back of the 2002 season, 2-1, by Cal State Fullerton (3-4-1) this afternoon. The Lobos (8-1-0) gave up a pair of late, first half goals to the Titans, the second being an own-goal, but were able to fight back in the second half with a score of their own by sophomore Eric Carlson. UNM had its winning streak snapped at eight games which will go down as the best start in school history.
The Lobos came out uncharacteristically slow in the first half, only firing four shots at Titan goalie Sam Reynolds. On the other side, Fullerton took ten, first half shots at the Lobo defense. The first break in UNMs armor came in the 40th minute when CSFs Brent Whitfield found David Dischner for his first goal of the season. It was the first goal Lobo keeper Andrew Weber had allowed in over 150 minutes of play.
With under 40 seconds left in the half, Fullertons Adriano Lima fed a corner kick to Dischner who headed the ball towards the goal. At that point, Lobo defender Brandon Moss, a major part of New Mexicos 13th ranked defense, tried to head the shot clear. However, his errant attempt found the back of the net, giving the Titans a 2-0 lead.
They were a good, solid team, said head coach Jeremy Fishbein. We played them well in the first half but the own-goal gave them a tough, 2-1, lead. We got the better of them in the second half and actually gave ourselves a chance to win in the end.
The Lobos turned up their defense in the second frame, only allowing two shots in the period while taking eight of their own. In the 85th minute, senior co-captain Junro Nartia placed a corner kick for Carlson who headed in his second goal of the season. It was Naritas third assist and pulled the Lobos to within one goal of CSF. In the final minute, Narita took a shot from the top of the box, but his game-tying attempt sailed just wide-left, breaking the second longest winning streak in UNM history.
The Lobos continue their California road trip with a Tuesday night match against UC Irvine at 8:00 p.m. (M.D.T.) in Irvine, Calif. The Anteaters (4-4-1) had been ranked as high as No. 9 in the NSCAA Far West Region poll before losing to UNLV (2-1 in OT) and No. 19 San Diego (2-1) this weekend. The Lobos will return to the UNM Soccer Complex on Sunday, October 6 for a 1:00 p.m. (M.D.T.) match against UC-Colorado Springs (3-6-0, 2-4-0 RMAC).
