Albuquerque — The University of New Mexico Lobos fell behind Texas Tech 28-0 at halftime, as the Red Raiders went on to blank the Lobos 49-0. New Mexico was shut out for the first time since the 1992 season (35-0 at BYU). UNM had scored in 111 straight games.
The Lobos drop to 2-4 overall while Tech improves to 3-2. In front of an ESPN2 national audience and 35,111 in attendance at University Stadium, Texas Tech quarterback Kliff Kingsbury threw for six touchdowns before being replaced by backup B.J. Symons in the fourth quarter. Kingsbury completed 41 of 59 passes for 407 yards.
UNM quarterback Casey Kelly fractured the ulna (forearm) bone in his left arm late in the first quarter on a run up the middle. Kelly continued to play in the second quarter, but x-rays taken at halftime revealed the break. He is expected to miss at least four weeks and could possibly be out for the season.
Kelly was replaced by senior Justin Millea. True freshman Kole McKamey also saw action in the second half.
Texas Tech mounted consecutive drives of 68, 73, 82 and 27 yards in the first half, the final coming with 43 seconds to play.
While trailing 7-0, UNM drove to the Tech 28 on its third drive of the game, but a DonTrell Moore option run on fourth and one came up short and the drive stalled. After the Red Raiders’ next scoring drive, the Lobos once again mounted a spirited succession of plays. Kelly completed passes of 15 and 10 yards to Brian Penley and Joe Manning, respectively, and after Moore converted a fourth and two run into a first down, the drive again stalled, this time at UNM’s own 48.
In the second half, the Lobos drove past midfield twice, once to the Texas Tech 48 and the other to the Red Raider 26 on their final drive of the game. Millea completed six of 14 pass attempts and McKamey completed one of four passes in his first action of the year.
Lobo wide receiver Dwight Counter caught five passes for 22 yards and Moore had 34 yards on eight carries to lead all UNM rushers.
UNM has a bye next week before visiting UNLV on October 12 for its second Mountain West Conference game of the season. I
