September 17, 2002 Weekly Football Media Luncheon Player/Head Coach Quotes

NEW MEXICO HEAD COACH ROCKY LONG

(on New Mexico States offensive and defensive schemes): They run some option, they do a great job with play action pass, they run some power run plays. There hasnt been a drop-off at all with their (new) quarterbacks. Their quarterback coach has been doing a great job and it’s their scheme that is so good. They’re not a real blitz team. They are going to play a 4-3 type defense. They’re going to play what we call quarters in the secondary which is reading routes and adjusting your coverage by the patterns that you run. I’m sure they’re going to try and stop the run. When we do something well it’s based on how well we run the ball and if we can’t run the ball then we’ll struggle on offense. They’ll probably drop a safety down in to make it an eight-man front to try to tell us we’re going to have to beat them throwing the ball.

(on adjusting the offensive play calling due to RB Quincy Wrights absence): We’re going to try and do what we always do. We’re going to try and run the ball and be a 50/50 team, but a lot of our big play potential suffered with Quincy getting hurt. Plays are called by what the defense is giving you. People ask all the time why don’t we throw it deep and thats usually because teams are playing off of us, four guys deep. Last week we threw it deep because they were pressing up on our receivers.

(on what NMSU will try to do to slow the Lobo blitz): New Mexico State will slow us down by going with two tight ends and two backs. They just try to mash you and run right over you. Utah does the same thing against us. Most teams we face try to spread us out, go sideline to sideline and just throw the ball before we can get there. Other teams go shoe to shoe when they have an offensive line that averages 300+ pounds and they have two big running backs. NMSU and Utah go shoe to shoe. You run all those blitzes and they just try to mash whoever shows up in the gap. That will be their game plan this week. We’re just going to have to stand there and see who’s the toughest team.

(on the UNM-NMSU rivalry): I think it’s a great rivalry and I think it’s the most important non-conference game on our schedule. They have 24 New Mexico kids on their roster and we have 32. If you’ve been in our program at least one year you learn that this is a big game. We have some freshman who don’t understand how important this game is yet but they will after next weekend.

(on the play of the Lobo offensive line): The most consistent part of our football team right now is the offensive line. Last Saturday was a good test. Baylor had Big 12 athletes and it was the biggest defensive line that we will face until we play BYU or Utah. They had some great athletes and quite a few seniors. We’re going to play against a much more determined team this week. New Mexico State may not as athletic as Baylor was, but I think theyre more determined and I don’t think they will have any trouble getting excited to play us.

(on the performance of QB Casey Kelly against Baylor): Casey Kelly played the best game last week that he’s played since he became our starting quarterback. His statistics don’t show that because he had several long passes dropped and so his statistics would have been much better had those been caught. I thought he was pretty sharp and the ball was on the hands most of the time. I thought he found some guys on second and third looks and I thought he moved the ball pretty well when he was being chased and on the run. He did a nice job checking a couple of plays. To beat NMSU Casey is going to have to throw like he did last Saturday and we’re going to have to catch it a lot better than we did.

CORNER BACK DAVID HALL

(on the defensive performance against Baylor last week): It felt good because we havent been playing to our full potential. We are still not playing to our full potential but as the season goes on we are making the right corrections and adjustments to get better. I think it is coming together piece by piece.

(on facing New Mexico State): Its a big rivalry for us. We are going into the game knowing that its going to be a battle.

(on repeating the shut out from last year): We always want a shut out because we have to pay for every point that is scored on us. I think the shut out last year was a big deal for us, but these are different teams. We are just going to have to go out and play our best and see what happens.

(on senior running back Quincy Wrights season-ending injury): We all feel sorry for him because he is just like our brother and he is a big part of our offense. Now we just have to move on and put our younger guys in and see what they can do.

DEFENSIVE END D.J. RENTERIA

(on the defensive performance vs. Baylor): Our coaches had us in great position all night and we were able to run around and make plays. We started slow over the first couple of games but our defense is playing great now. I am just coming into my own right now, my teammates are helping and the coaching staff is putting me in the right place at the right time. It felt great to come out and get the win. We gave a great effort and had a lot of fun.

(on the NMSU game): They have talented players down in Las Cruces just as we have here in Albuquerque. They are a well disciplined team and they have a great coaching staff there with coach Samuel. We have to give them the respect they deserve. Its a great rivalry and its all just going to come down to the game. Every year I look forward to this game. I was recruited by them as well as New Mexico. Its a great game all together with the instate rivalry, the fans and the atmosphere. Im just going to go down there and play my heart out and see what happens.

RUNNING BACK DONTRELL MOORE

(on facing the Aggies this weekend): Any time you play an instate rivalry its more important and exciting. Its just like in high school when (Roswell (N.M.) HS) would go play Goddard. It was something to be excited about. I think its important that we prepare ourselves mentally to play the best we possibly can.

(on the added importance of the rivalry for a native New Mexican): Its very emotional and it has a sentimental value to me. Being from Roswell, there are a lot of guys on New Mexico State that I probably know or have played against. Its very exciting to play them and I am ready to go down there and have a great time and hopefully get a win.LIN|OHQSGzTFVyWExYDwCv_BuacAtdfsg?rik>qlnpo;nt:vm!w#9ly$8&k|’7~j)+6i,5.h><>hQ”&Pf7z8Lb aJ2tv2G\-DmqB,UW(gl&ORy#7ga8|IMs1b3wHCl+.T~rCfX)%Nmx>6`S$Hh9r0NZcB4lx*IT/7)f”QmY~xy?m8$()+|:;z
