Denver, Colo. – For the second time in as many games, the University of New Mexico men’s soccer team had three freshmen score goals in a convincing victory. This time it was a 3-1 win for the Lobos (3-0-0) over Georgia Southern (1-2-0). Freshmen Ben Ashwill, Sam Suflita, and Brandon Moss all scored in the Lobo win. It was the first collegiate goal for Suflita and Moss and the second goal for Ashwill. UNM is off to a 3-0-0 start for the first time since the 1994 season.

Ashwills second goal of the season came in the 31st minute of action when fellow freshman Lance Watson fed him for the score. It was Watsons second assist on the season, giving him a team-leading 6 points.

Even though the freshmen have accounted for seven of UNMs eight goals in 2002, they arent without help from the upperclassmen. Junior Stian Eriksen and senior co-captain Javier Carrasco both played solid games for the Lobos while UNMs other captain, senior Junro Narita, provided assists on both of the Lobos last two goals.

In the 48th minute, Narita fed Suflita for his first collegiate goal, giving UNM a 2-0 lead. The Eagles were able to strike back with a goal of their own in the 57th minute when Tommy Irwin beat Lobo goalie Andrew Weber for the score. It was just the second goal Weber has allowed in 2002.

Head coach Jeremy Fishbein did have concerns with UNM not being able to finish teams off in their first weekend of action. However, Narita helped to settle any doubts when he fed Moss for his first goal, putting the game away 3-1.

UNM will next face Illinois-Chicago in Denver, Colo. The Match takes place on Sunday, September 8 at 11:00 a.m. (M.D.T.). The Lobos will be trying to go 4-0-0 to start the season for the first time since 1987. UNM has already matched their regular-season win total from 2001.
