Albuquerque, NM – The NCAA has chosen 50 Woman of the Year state winners for 2002, and former Lobo tennis player Courtney Choate won the award for New Mexico. The NCAA Woman of the Year Award honors outstanding female athletes who have excelled in academics, athletics and community leadership. Choate, a four-year letter-winner for Kathy Kolankiewiczs womens tennis team, graduated from UNM in May with a degree in marketing.
Choate showed success both on the field and in the classroom during her four years at UNM. Athletically, she was an All-Mountain West Conference selection in doubles following her junior season in 2001. Last season she was the captain of the 13-9 Lobos and helped UNM to a season-high ranking of 50 in NCAA Division I. She finished her playing career with a 62-36 (.633) record in singles and a 60-50 (.545) record in doubles. Her all-time rankings at UNM include No. 12 in singles wins, No. 10 in combined singles and doubles wins, and No. 9 in singles winning percentage. Last season she also earned a MWC Player of the Week honor.
Academically, Choate has few equals, posting a 4.03 grade point average. She was named to the Intercollegiate Tennis Associations Academic All-American team as a junior and senior. Her senior year she was also a member of the Verizon At-Large Academic All-American Team. Last season she was also one of seven national finalist for the Sporting News Radio Socrates Award, and she won the ITA Central Regions Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sportsmanship and Leadership Award. Choate was named to the MWC All-Academic team for three seasons and was the Western Athletic Conference Freshman Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 1999.
From the 50 state winners, 10 national finalists will be named on September 16, 2002 in the NCAA Newsletter.
