Las Vegas, Nev. – The University of New Mexico men’s soccer team earned its second victory of the year with a 3-0 shutout of Marshall (0-2-0) today in Las Vegas, Nev. Freshmen Lance Watson, Matt Chavez, and Ben Ashwill all scored for the Lobos (2-0-0), while sophomore goalkeeper Andrew Weber earned his sixth career shutout with the win.

Watson struck first in the 26th minute when he took Chavez’s free kick off one bounce in the box and put it in for his second score in as many games. The assist was Chavez’s first of the season.

The Lobo defense, anchored by sophomore Danny Bills and freshman Brandon Moss, frustrated the Thundering Herd the entire first half by not allowing any shots in the period. Weber only had to make one save on five shots in the second half. His sixth career shutout moves him into seventh place all-time at UNM.

The Lobos, not wanting to sweat out another close game like the 2-1 win over Northern Illinois on Friday, looked for some insurance goals in the second half. In the 65th minute, Watson returned the favor to Chavez when he assisted on Chavez’s first collegiate goal, giving the Lobos a 2-0 lead. Sophomore Eric Carlson helped ice the game when he fed a center pass from the left side to Ashwill for the score in the 87th minute.

“It was good to get a solid performance for 90 minutes,” stated UNM head coach Jeremy Fishbein. “We have such a young team, it was good to get through this weekend with two wins.”

The Lobos move to 2-0-0 on the season while Marshall drops to 0-2-0. The last time the Lobos started 2-0-0 was in 1999 when they defeated Loyola Marynount and San Francisco to open the season. UNM next travels to Denver, Colo. for weekend matches against Georgia Southern (Friday, Sept. 6 1:30 p.m. M.D.T.) and Illinois-Chicago (Sunday, Sept. 8 11:00 a.m. M.D.T.). UNM’s home opener is Friday, September 13 at 7:30 p.m. against Cal Poly in the UNM Soccer Complex.
