HEAD COACH ROCKY LONG
(on UNM’s expected improvement from the first to the second game): “I expect a lot better concentration than we had the other night. If we have better concentration, that usually means we’ll execute better.”
(on the physical difference between UNM and NC State): “I think they had a little more speed than we did, but I don’t think they were bigger or stronger. They were legitimately trying to establish a running game against us, because they knew that they need to have a running game to be successful in their league, but they couldn’t do it. There is no evidence that we were smaller or weaker or not as physical, but their was evidence a couple times in pass coverage that our DB’s weren’t as fast as their wide receivers.”
(on the difference between a top ACC team and a Mountain West team): “I don’t think there is a big difference. Now you can say that Virginia is picked in the bottom half of their league, but Colorado State beat them.I’m really disappointed because I thought we’d play North Carolina State really close.”
(on his concerns facing Weber State): “I have some of the same concerns as last week. Hopefully our guys will learn from the experience. The fact that you have to concentrate when you play football will be more evident this Saturday than it was last Saturday.”
(on correcting mistakes in practice): “It’s much easier to educate and teach them after a they get burned in a game. Most players fashion themselves as game time players. ‘When the lights go on, don’t worry about it coach, I’m a game player. I’m not a practice guy, I’m a game guy.’ A lot of young players really believe that is true. I have yet to be around one of those guys that can practice horrible and play great on Saturday, I haven’t seen one yet. A lot of the ones that really thought that proved that they weren’t.”
(on Weber State): “They’re very explosive on offense. They averaged right at 450 yards per game last year and a little over 31 points per game. Three of their top-four receivers are back, four of their starting offensive linemen are back, their running back is gone and their starting quarterback is gone, except I think the kid playing now is better. He’s 6-6, weighs 215 pounds runs pretty good to get out of trouble, and we didn’t fare very well against a big quarterback last week. On defense they have a lot of kids coming back that have played. Last year, they were basically a 4-3 team and usually played zone coverage. They did not blitz much and were not very aggressive on defense as far as bringing extra people for pass rush. They play a little man-free coverage, but most of it is a two and three deep zone.”
(on the difference in talent between a Division I-AA team and the other teams on the 2002 schedule): “We played Northern Arizona here twice. The first year was easy, but the second year we were hanging on by our toenails. I think there’s probably not a huge difference in talent, the biggest difference is in depth. We’ve got more bodies. I think this when we play ACC teams or Pac-10 teams or Big 12 teams, I think that our starting 22 can play against all of those guys. It’s when you get to the next 22 that the Big 12 or ACC teams have an advantage. So I think (Weber State’s) top 22 can compete really well with our top 22. Now I think our next 22 are better than their next 22.”
SR. RUNNINGBACK QUINCY WRIGHT
(on what can be learned from the frustrations of last Saturday): “We learned that we have to come out more relaxed. The first half we came out pumped and ready to go but we used a lot of our energy in the locker room. You live and learn. We went out in the first half and weren?t too sure but in the second half we came out a little better and were more relaxed.”
(on not giving up in the NC State Game): “I think it?s very important that we played hard throughout the whole game. In the second half we had to come out and play very hard. We were down 21-0 but we still played with heart. I know none of the Lobos that are here are willing to give in. We?re going to fight to the finish.”
(on the positives and negatives from his performance):“First of all I basically just ran the ball. The offensive line did a great job with their blocking.Sometimes I was getting in to the secondary without even getting touched. I expect more out of myself. I think I could show more.”
(on the home opener this weekend and playing hard against Weber State):“It?s good to be home and have the support from the crowd. Weber State is going to come in prepared to play. It?s probably going to be like a SuperBowl for them. This week we have to stay focused and concentrate and not act like it?s a team we canbeat but rather as a team we can get better playing against.”
JR. SAFETY TERRELL GOLDEN
(on what the team took out of the NC State game): “When we got on the field it showed that we weren’t ready. We were ready physically but not mentally. I think what we learned was that we need to concentrate before the game and not worry about hootin’ and hollerin’. We need to just get our minds straight in our locker room.”
(on the team’s level of enthusiasm after the loss to NC State):“Oh yeah, we’re ready to go. That was only one game. We have 12 or 13 more. We have to take one game at a time and we?re looking forward to Weber State. I don?t think the loss was any kind of blow to our confidence at all.”
(on the pros and cons of UNM’s defensive performance at NC State):“I didn?t like anything. Absolutely nothing. I think the defense was sloppy all game long, if you ask me. We weren’t covering or concentrating well enough at all.”
(on the benefits of playing in front of the home crowd):“It’s always good to be in your environment around people who are cheering for us. We just play and have fun in front of our home crowd, knowing that after the game we can run up into the stands and shake hands with the fans of the Red Menace. It just adds to the excitement.”
JR. OFFENSIVE TACKLE JASON LENZMEIER
(on learing from the loss to NC State):“We realize from the loss some of the things we aren?t good at. There are definitely things we have to work on and that?s going to help us in our next game.”
(on coming out with too much emotion at NC State):“We had a lot of problems adjusting to being too hyped. Going out and playing a top-25 ACC team made people a little nervous and they tried to get pumped up, but ended up getting a little too excited.”
(on getting mentally prepared for the Weber State game and changing gears from NC State):“You have to take everybody the same way. Everybody has a chance to win at any time. Weber State is a good football team. They want to try and knock off a Division 1 team.”
(on playing at home):“I love playing here. It?s always nice coming home. It?s nice and dry here. The humidity got to me a little bit in North Carolina. Plus, my family?s going to be here.”
(on the running game):“We got down early and fast at NC State. We didn?t move the ball at all and the defense gave up some points. We?re going to run the ball this year and we?re going to be successful at it.”n#?MvT%5i:F~pO .Xd5yJj(_R0|t:Ed”Z+Luo4U&Eoj;.WP!?ei6’zQK9`1c!uFKt3,pAEnV’-Vk<>hQ”&Pf7z8Lb aJ2tv2G\-DmqB,UW(gl&ORy#7ga8|IMs1b3wHCl+.T~rCfX)%Nmx>6`S$Hh9r0NZcB4lx*IT/7)f”QmY~Te)Nu<>;hwytzc-gjx~~wyuw>
