Durango, Colo. – The University of New Mexico men’s soccer team faced Fort Lewis College in their final exhibition match today in Durango, Colo. The Lobos needed an extra 12 minutes to get the win over the Skyhawks, which are ranked No. 16 in the NCAA Division II by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Junior midfielder Micah Newman blasted home the game-winner in the 102nd minute of action to give UNM their second exhibition win this season.

The Lobos got on the board early when freshman Ben Ashwill scored in the 11th minute of play. Fort Lewis answered in the 36th minute when Cy Rauworth and Nate Lockey assisted Bernado Costa to tie the game at 1-1. Neither team was able to score in the second half, despite some good looks by the Lobos. “I thought we should have been able to capitalize more on our chances in the second half,” said Lobo head coach Jeremy Fishbein. “We should have scored three or four times but we didn’t convert.”

Fortunately for UNM, Newman was able to convert in overtime and give Fishbein the win over his old team. Fishbein spent seven seasons as the head coach at Fort Lewis between 1992-1998, posting a 74-47-7 while winning four conference championships.

Sophomore Andrew Weber played the whole game at goalkeeper, making seven saves while giving up one goal.

“We have played some tough exhibition games and were are improving with each game,” said Fishbein. “Our guys were able to come through today, but we need to keep improving as a team to be ready for the regular season.” Last week the Lobos defeated Yavapai Junior College, 2-0, ranked No. 2 in the NSCAA Junior College polls.

UNM opens the season with a trip to Las Vegas, Nev. to face Northern Illinois on Friday, August 30. The home opener is set for Friday, September 13 against Cal Poly in the TLC Plumbing and Utility Invitational.
