Head coach Rocky Long and the University of New Mexico Football program has announced the dates of its annual UNM Football Camp, to be held this summer, June 13-16. Registration is on June 13 at 12 p.m. at the L.F. “Tow” Diehm Facility, and the camp is open to anyone entering grades 9-12 in the fall of 2002. “As the UNM head football coach, I welcome you to our Lobo Football Camp. Myself and the entire staff will teach the fundamentals and techniques that will help you become a much improved football player. The camp will also assist in team work, enthusiasm and having fun. CAMP HIGHLIGHTS:

— Great opportunity to improve as an indivdual and team– Camp structured for all o-line and d-line position work, video, weight room, pass rush competitions, individual fundamental work with UNM coaches daily A.M. and P.M.– “Lobo Air” Passing Tournament had in excess of 25 high schools represented last year! Guaranteed 9 games of 7 on 7, plus playoffs. Championship game played in University Stadium.– 1/2 hour provided for high school coaches to spend with team each day prior to passing tournament.– Tee shirts and hats for winners of all competitions.– Those campers who do not come with a high school team will be assigned to a 7 on 7 renegade team. UNM coaches will run renegade teams.

STRENGTH AND SPEED TRAINING:

The Unviversity of New Mexico strength and conditioning program has gained national recognition by focusing on overall strength development and athletic improvement. You will learn football-specific weight lifting as well as performing Olympic lifts, plyometrics and other training methods.

TRAINERS:

A full-time University of New Mexico Athletic Training Staff will be on duty for the duration of the camp.

SUPERVISION:

Lobo coaches will stay with the campers each night of the camp. Campers are expected to abide by all camp rules and regulations.

Defense

DL “Focus will be on maximizing individual’s talents. Areas to be covered are pass rush techniques, footwork and agility, along with general d-line fundamentals.” Coach Grady Stretz

LB “This phase of the camp will emphasize the very same techniques that are taught to UNM linebackers, including pass drops, man coverage techniques, as well as blitzing skills and run recognition.” Coach Lenny Rodriquez

DBs “The defensive backs will be instructed in solid defensive back fundamentals, including man coverage techniques, blitz angles, zone coverage, tackling, play recognition, block protection and take-away skills.” Coach Bronco Mendenhall

Kickers/Punters “Top notch techniques and drills will be used to improve as a kicker and a punter.” Coach Jeff Conway

Offense

QB “All QBs will be taught proper throwing fundamentals. An 11 drill warmup series will be presented. Also included will be the 3 & 5 step drop, along with sprintout techniques. In addition, various game mechanics will be taught.” Coach Dan Dodd

RB “YAC’s (yards after contact). Ball security, taking care of the ball, run techniques and overall skills.” Coach Jeff Conway

WR “Wide Receivers will learn stance, release techniques, route progression, and ball catching skills. The University of New Mexico skills development manual will also be used.”

OL “Proper stance, pass pro techniques for play-action, sprintout and drop back. All phases of run techniques, including trap, drive and zone.”

TE “Being productive in run game or pass game is our goal.”
