The Black Coaches Association has announced that the University of New Mexico will visit North Carolina State in football next season in the 2002 Black Coaches Association Bowl. The game, which is the 13th contest on New Mexico’s regular season schedule, will be played August 24, 2002, in Raleigh, N.C.

“This is a great opportunity for us to play a solid team from a major conference,” head coach Rocky Long said. “This will make for a long football season, but I think the players are excited about the opportunity.”

The Black Coaches Association now has two “pre-season” games slated for this year, with the announcement that Arizona State will play at Nebraska in its annual Black Coaches Association Classic. The BCA Bowl benefits post-graduate scholarship opportunities for minorities interested in coaching and administration, as well as developmental programs for members of the BCA.

This will be the first meeting between UNM and NC State, and the first ever meeting for a Lobo team against an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent. The Wolfpack finished 7-5 last year and earned a berth in the Tangerine Bowl, which the Wolfpack lost to Pittsburgh, 34-19. N.C. State also beat Florida State last year in Tallahassee, 34-28.

The Lobos home-opener is against Weber State on Saturday, Aug. 31, at University Stadium.
