The University of New Mexico womens basketball team overcame a poor shooting first half to take a 63-53 win over San Diego State (10-14, 2-10 MWC) in the Pit today. The Lobos (20-6, 9-3 MWC) shot just 25% from the floor in the first half, but out-scored the Aztecs by 14 points in the second half to get their 20th win of the season. Lobo junior Jordan Adams led all scorers with 19 points, while senior Molly McKinnon scored six points in her final game in The Pit.
The Lobos came out strong in the early part of the first half, holding San Diego State scoreless for the first three minutes of play. McKinnon scored a lay-up with 17:22 left in the first half to give the Lobos a 7-0 advantage and get the 12,868 fans on their feet for senior day.
San Diego State settled down and went on a 19-4 run over the next six minutes as the Lobos couldnt get any of their shots to fall. The Aztecs built as much as a nine-point first half lead, but junior Tiffany Scaglione kept UNM close by grabbing three offensive rebounds and scoring five straight points in the first half. The Lobos went into the lockerroom trailing SDSU, 24-28.
In the second half UNM jumped on the Aztecs early. Junior Chelsea Grear tied the game at 30 when she hit a fall-away jump-shot in the paint with 15:35 left in the game. Melissa Forest hit a three and then a pull-up jumper on back-to-back possessions to give the Lobos a 41-36 lead with 9:26 left in the game. Four consecutive points by Lindsay Arndt gave UNM a 45-36 lead with 8:03 left in the game. New Mexico held off SDSU for the final minutes to take the ten point win.
UNMs Adams added six rebounds, four assists, and three blocks to go along with her 19 points. Scaglione finished with five points and three rebounds, all in the first half, while Forest added eight points and nine rebounds, all in the second half. Grear grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with her seven points and Arndt chipped in 10 points in the game. McKinnon finished her final game in The Pit with six points three rebounds and an assist.
SDSU was led by Jamey Coxs 12 points on four three pointers. Claire Swinbak added ten points and six rebounds.
The Lobos next game is Thursday, February 28 at Wyoming. Game time is set for 5:00 PM (MST).
