Colorado Springs, Colo. – The Mountain West Conference released its 2002 football schedule today, announcing it will kick off its fourth year of competition on Thursday, Aug. 22, when Colorado State visits the Virginia Cavaliers in the second annual Jim Thorpe Classic. The University of New Mexico begins its 103rd football season with a home contest against Weber State on Saturday, Aug. 31. and will kickoff conference action when it travels to Air Force to face the Falcons the following week on Saturday, September 7th. The first full slate of conference games will begin on October 12.
The Lobos have a 12-game schedule this year and have secured one nationally televised game, a home date on Friday, Sept. 27, against Texas Tech that will be carried by ESPN. Other non-conference contests include a home game with Big-12 opponent Baylor, and road dates with rival New Mexico State and the Utah State Aggies.
The Lobos will have four road conference games and three MWC games at University Stadium. Along with the Air Force game, UNM will travel to UNLV, BYU and Colorado State, while it will host Utah, San Diego State and Wyoming in the season finale on Saturday, Nov. 30. The Lobos will have two bye weeks this year, on October 5 and November 2.
The Mountain West Conference is guaranteed a minimum of 23 regular-season appearances on ABC, ESPN/ESPN2 and ESPN +Plus in 2002, with the additional telecasts announced in the coming months. ABC will select at least two games involving MWC institutions, with three or four additional ESPN/ESPN2 telecasts expected. Again this season, ESPN+Plus will syndicate an eight-game regional MWC Game-of-the-Week package. Television games for the first three weeks of September will be determined by August 1. Remaining games will be chosen on six-day or 12-day picks.
