Provo, Utah-The University of New Mexico (19-6, 8-3) went on a 13-5 run early in the second half to hold a 43-29 lead over BYU (16-7, 7-4) enroute to a 71-64 victory. The Lobos had four players in double-figures as they won for the second year in a row at BYU.
Neither team seemed to get an edge in the first half. BYU held their biggest lead of the game early on, 8-2 but UNM would storm back and hold the halftime lead 30-24.
The beginning of the second half was all UNM as they led by as much as 13 but BYU was able to pull to within six with 1:45 left. UNM though was not to be denied as they kept their cool to grab their 19th win of the season, eighth conference victory. Jordan Adams would score 13 of her 18 points in the second half.
For UNM, three players had double-doubles, Adams led the team in scoring with 18 points and had 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season, sixth of her career. Chelsea Grear led the team in rebounding with 11 and she chipped in 12 points. Grear now has three double-doubles on the year, five for her career. Mandi Moore was also stellar for the Lobos with 15 points and 10 rebounds and was two assists away from a triple-double. Lindsey Arndt also scored in double-figures with 11.
For BYU, three players were in double-figures, led by Danielle Cheesman with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
The Lobos tentatively are second place in the league but will wait anxiously for the UNLV-Wyoming game tonight as the Lady Rebels could move to 8-4 if they win.
The Lobos will return home for their final home game of the 2002 season. UNM will take on San Diego State Saturday, Feb. 23 at 1:05 pm. The game will be senior Molly McKinnon’s last game for UNM.iy
