San Diego, CA-The University of New Mexico (15-4, 4-1 MWC) seemed in total control over the San Diego State Aztecs (8-9, 0-4) but the Aztecs wouldn’t fall easily as they fought to the bitter end losing, 58-49.
The Lobos took control from the opening tip although they allowed the Aztecs to hold a brief 5-4 lead with 12:54 left in the first period. UNM would then go on a 19-6 run to close the half and lead 32-13. The 13 points scored by San Diego State would tie Utep for the least amount of points an opponent has scored against the Lobos in the first half.
The Lobos would come out of the break and score nine straight unanswered points to lead 41-13. But San Diego State would not give up as they outscored the Lobos 26-18 over the next few minutes and would eventually go on a 10-0 run to close the gap and pull to within seven with :55 left to go. The Lobos would keep their heads and make their shots at the end to hold on to the lead and their fourth straight victory.
Molly McKinnon led the way for UNM with 15 points and six rebounds. Two other Lobo players scored in double figures, Mandi Moore had 11 and Melissa Forest chipped in 10. The Lobos would end up shooting 47% from the field and 82% from the line as they also outrebounded the Aztecs 44-34.
SDSU was led by Claire Swinbank who led all scorers with 18 points and Atim Otii had 11 points. The Aztecs shot a dismal 13% in the first half but rebounded and ended up shooting 29% for the game.
The Lobos will now travel to Las Vegas for a much anticipated rematch against the Lady Rebels. Game time is set for 8:35 p.m. (mst).)
