University of New Mexico offensive guard Claude Terrell was tabbed a freshman All-American by the Football Writers Association of America. The team, chosen by a panel of FWAA members representing each conference, was released on Jan. 3.

Terrell, a redshirt freshman from Texas City, Texas, started 10 of 11 games this season and tied for third on the team with 86 knockdown blocks. The 6-3, 320-pound strong guard participated in 757 of a possible 848 offensive snaps, and he played the entire game seven times.

The panel submitted nominations over the course of the season and an Internet vote by the panel was held position by position accordingly. Division I-A players competing in their first year of college football were eligible.

The panel members were: Randy Holtz, Rocky Mountain News; Adam Thompson, Denver Post; Mike Vega, Boston Globe; Ron Higgins, Memphis Commercial Appeal; Greg Doyel, Charlotte Observer; Bob Condotta, Tacoma News-Tribune; Angelique Chengalis, Detroit News; Doug Zaleski, Muncie Star Press; Neal Farmer, Houston Chronicle, and Mike Griffith, of the Knoxville News-Sentinel. Terrell is UNM’s second freshman to earn All-America honors this season. Linebacker Nick Speegle was a third team freshman All-America selection by The Sporting News earlier this year.
