The University of New Mexico womens basketball team jumped out to a big lead and never looked back, breezing to a 71-40 victory over Central Michigan University in the championship game of the 8th Annual Southwest Airlines Lobo Shootout on Saturday night in The Pit. New Mexico center Jordan Adams scored 23 points along with seven rebounds and five blocks en route to being named tournament Most Valuable Player.
After struggling to put away a scrappy St. Bonaventure squad the night before, UNM (10-3) controlled Central Michigan (6-3) from start to finish. The Lobos used a 18-2 run over a 7:36 span of the first half to quickly overwhelm the Chippewas, who had tied the score at two, 1:19 into the game. Adams had 10 points in the run and finished with 14 in the half. She also recorded four of her five blocks on the night in the first half to move into third place on the all-time UNM mens and womens basketball list with 224 career blocks.
Trailing 33-20 at the half, CMU worked the lead down to nine after guard Molli Munz scored back-to-back baskets to open the second half. However, UNM responded with an 8-0 burst over the next two minutes to end any comeback hopes for the Chippewas.
New Mexico dominated virtually every aspect of the game, holding Central Michigan to just 27.3 percent (15-55) shooting on the night, while shooting 50.8 percent (31-61) themselves. The Lobos also held a 43-29 rebounding advantage, a 9-2 edge in blocks and recorded 25 assists to the Chippewas five.
Freshman point guard Mandi Moore added 11 points and five assists for UNM, which had nine different players in the scoring column. Moore was also one of five Lobos to record at least three assists on the night. Forward Desiree Eidson paced Central Michigan with 15 points and eight rebounds.
New Mexico returns to action on Jan. 2 when it hosts Loyola Marymout at 7 p.m. (MST) at The Pit in Albuquerque.
