Albuquerque, N.M. — The state’s bragging rights remain with the University of New Mexico as the Lobos defeated the New Mexico State Aggies tonight by the score of 82-55. New Mexico improves to 8-3 overall while the Aggies drop to 4-5 on the season.
Leading the Lobos was junior center Jordan Adams who finished with a team-high 20 points, six blocks and seven rebounds. Adams has scored 20+ points in five of UNM’s 11 games and is averaging 16.6 points per game. Defensively Adams leads the nation in block stats with a season total of 47, good for a 4.3 per game average.
As a team New Mexico shot 47% hitting 29 of 62 from the field. The Lobos pulled down 47 boards and dished out 22 assists with freshman Mandi Moore leading the team with eight.
The Aggies struggled with the Lobos tight defense shooting only 37% for the game hitting 22 of 60 shots. NMSU did not go to the line until 16:57 in the second half and finishing 6-9 for the game. NMSU’s Mari Sanchez came into the game averaging 15.0 points per game but was held to only five points in 29 minutes of play.
The Lobos on the other hand went 19-29 from the charity stripe with Moore going 4-4 and freshman guard Stephanie Shaw hitting five of six free throws. Senior Molly McKinnon had a great night scoring 15 points and tied her season high with two three-pointers. McKinnon added four assists, one steal and four rebounds. Everyone on the team (with the exception of injured Brittany Wolfgang) scored tonight.
New Mexico head coach Don Flanagan is currently on a 12 game win streak against New Mexico State after starting 0-2 in his first year with UNM.
The Lobos return to action this weekend hosting the Southwest Airlines Lobo Shootout on Dec. 21-22. Opening the tournament on Fri., Dec. 21 will be Long Island University who will face Central Michigan at 6 p.m. followed by host New Mexico against St. Bonaventure at 8 p.m. The tournament wraps up on Sat., Dec. 21 with the consolation game set for 6 p.m. followed by the championship at 8 p.m.I
