The University of New Mexico’s Jarrod Baxter and Charles Moss were named the Mountain West Conference Offense and Defensive Players of the Week following their season finale against in-state rival New Mexico State.
Baxter, playing in his last game as a Lobo, rushed for 131 yards and two touchdowns to earn his second POW honor. Baxter logged his sixth career 100-yard rushing game (third this season) and had his fourth multiple-touchdown game in New Mexico’s 53-0 blanking of New Mexico State. He led an offensive attack that rushed for a season-high 350 yards. Baxter finishes his career ranked seventh all-time on the UNM rushing list with 2,090 yards.
Moss, a junior linebacker, led a New Mexico defensive effort that registered the Lobos first shutout in 206 games in UNM’s 53-0 victory over New Mexico State. Moss tallied a career-high 11 tackles, including two for loss and forced a fumble. It was the Lobos first shutout since a 27-0 blanking of West Texas State in 1984.
New Mexico players earned POW honors seven times this season. Baxter and linebacker Gary Davis each were honored twice, while Moss, safety Terrell Golden and kicker Vladimir Borombozin each were name once. UNM ended the season 6-5 (4-3 MWC), the first winning season under Rocky Long and only the fourth winning season the past 19 years.
