University of New Mexico linebacker Gary Davis was named the Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Week following UNM’s 27-17 victory against UNLV last weekend.
Davis, a senior from Greenwood, Miss., had 15 tackles, including 10 solo stops, and recovered a third-quarter fumble that set up the go-ahead touchdown in New Mexico’s 27-17 win over UNLV. With the Lobos trailing 17-14, Davis fell on a fumble by UNLV quarterback Kurt Nantkes at the Rebels 23-yardline leading to an UNM touchdown two plays later. Davis’ final tackle helped New Mexico hold UNLV on fourth-and-1 at the Lobos’ 36 with 7:30 left. He set a New Mexico single-season record with his 17th tackle for loss and he leads the team with 85 tackles on the year.
Davis is currently second in the MWC with 6 sacks and is tied for league-lead with 17 tackles for loss. His 9.4 tackles a game ranks third in the conference and he has registered 73 tackles in his last 7 games.
This is the second POW honor for Davis this year and the fifth by a Lobo this season. Jarrod Baxter was an offensive POW, Terrell Golden was honored on the defensive sid eof the ball and kicker Vladimir Borombozin earned the special teams POW award last week.
