The program was started by former UNM head mens basketball coach Dave Bliss in 1992-93 after seeing how his youngest son became interested in reading at his elementary school. The program is administered by the UNM athletics marketing department, working closely with school staff and administrators, and is offered to all middle schools in Albuquerque, Rio Rancho and surrounding school districts.Read with the Lobos is a reading-incentive program now at the end of its eighth year of operation. The program was started by former UNM head mens basketball coach Dave Bliss in 1992-93 after seeing how his youngest son became interested in reading at his elementary school. The program is administered by the UNM athletics marketing department, working closely with school staff and administrators, and is offered to all middle schools in Albuquerque, Rio Rancho and surrounding school districts. Albuquerques Lowell Elementary School, as a “Join-A-School” partner of Lobo Athletics, also participates in the program.
The goal of the program is to encourage children to read, and to reward them for their efforts with donations of tickets to Lobo athletics events, primarily football and women’s basketball. The program is divided into two sessions – Fall and Spring – for two reasons: one, to allow for modifications in the program, if necessary; and two, to allow prizes/incentives to be developed around both the fall and spring sports. Assemblies are held at many of the participating schools, which enables UNM student-athletes, staff and coaches to reach the community and bring the program directly into the schools. It also gives the student-athletes the opportunity to promote academics and athletics, and to show the students that it is possible to be successful in both their academic and athletic endeavors. Assemblies are a great vehicle for UNM student-athletes to relate their own personal stories of how they became intercollegiate athletes by studying hard, reading and caring about academics.
Participating students are given special bookmarks, which they use to write down the titles of books as they read them. When they have completed their bookmark, they can submit it to the UNM athletics marketong department for the appropriate prize. During the current session (Spring of 2002), a total of 19 middle schools are participating and over 8,000 bookmarks have been distributed. The program will end Nov. 21, at which time all prizes will be distributed and a determination made as to the top-10 readers throughout the participating schools. These top readers will be rewarded with “special” prizes, which may include an invitation to a Lobo basketball game for an on-court presentation.
COMCAST and Intel have been sponsors of the Read with the Lobos program for many years. COMCAST is particularly active in the program, contributing premium prizes for top readers and participating in school assemblies. Sponsors are extremely important to the continuance of this valuable community program; they provide the support that enables UNM athletics to supply promotional materials, posters and giveaway items to the top readers.
The University of New Mexico’s primary aim is to educate, and the Read with the Lobos program is a great tool to encourage education and reading throughout the youth of our community.

The Lobos have an overall record of 136-159 and a 96-58 record since the program was reestablished in 1991-92. Since Don Flanagan came on board the Lobos have had a winning program for five straight years.
VS THE UNIVERSITY OF THE PACIFIC: These two teams have met only once before with the Pacific Tigers defeating the Lobos 85-58 at Pacific. That game came during the 1993-94 season when UNM was only one season away from acquiring Don Flanagan.
AGAINST THE BIG WEST: UNM has played every team but two in the Big West Conference. The Lobos are 12-6 against the Big West Conference. NEW MEXICO AND THE WNIT: Last season New Mexico was the host of five WNIT games. The Lobos dominated the competition in the first four rounds, winning by an average of 21 ppg and holding opponents to just 33.3% from the field. The Lobos advanced further in postseason play than any other squad in school history. UNM won four games, after having never won more then two and having never advanced past the quarterfinals. In the first round, UNM jumped on to of Houston, 16-2 and cruised to a 72-49 win. In the second round, the Lobos belted Arizona, 75-62, jumping out to another big lead, this time 29-4 midway through the first half. In the quarterfinals, the Lobos outscored Alabama-Birmingham 30-11 between the first and second halves and rolled to a 77-55 win. In the semifinals, UNM led 37-17 at halftime against Hawaii and never let up, enroute to a 68-43 victory. In the championship game, the Lobos led Ohio State for the majority of the game until guard Jamie Lewis hit a pair of threes to propel the Buckeyes to a 62-61 win. Jordan Adams and Chelsea Grear were both named to the WNIT All-Tournament Team.
THE WNIT AND THE PIT: UNM made in its third straight WNIT appearance in 2000-01. UNM has played all nine of its WNIT games at home the last three years. The Lobos have averaged an attendance of 8,981 in their WNIT appearances. In 1999 the Lobos matched up with Pepperdine and won 81-69 before an audience of 9,254. Then UNM played Washington and won a close one 68-63 before 8,356. The Lobos lost their next game to Drake, 73-60 before 11,213 people. Then in the 2000 season the Lobos hosted one game losing to Long Beach State, 87-63 before a crowd of 5,028. This past season the Lobos started out with Houston, winning 72-49 before 5,133. Then New Mexico defeated Arizona 75-62 before 5,938. UNM then thumped UAB, 77-55 before 6,796 people. In the semifanls the Lobos defeated Hawaii, 68-43 before a crowd of 11,090. In the championship game, the Lobos hosted a sold-out crowd of 11,018 as they lost to Ohio State, 62-61.
FOUR-SCORE: The Lobos’ top four scorers in the WNIT produced bigger numbers then they did during the regular season. Jordan Adams, Miranda Sanchez, Molly McKinnon and Chelsea Grear accounted for nearly 43 ppg during the regular season or 62.2% of the teams scoring. In the WNIT, the quarter scored 52.2 ppg, or 74% of the teams points.
PRESEASON WNIT: The Lobos have made one other preseason WNIT appearance in 1997-98. UNM defeated Santa Clara in the first game, 69-62 then lost a close one to then-ranked Western Kentucky, 77-76. Both games were played in The Pit. That was the year that the Lobos went on to win the WAC Tournament and make their first ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
HEAD COACH DON FLANAGAN: Don Flanagan, arguably the greatest women’s basketball coach at New Mexico, is entering his seventh season at UNM. Flanagan took over this struggling program in 1995 and the Lobos have improved to a remarkable 122-63 (.516), they’ve captured a conference regular-season championship, a conference tournament championship and made four consecutive postseason appearances, including the schools first-ever NCAA bid. Flanagan has already become the school’s all-time leader in victories, surpassing Doug Hoselton’s previous mark of 89 from 1980-87. Amazingly, Flanagan took just 133 games to reach 90 wins for his career, while Hos
