COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The University of New Mexico will officially host both teams that qualified for the 2017 Mountain West Championship as the league announced the complete 2018 football schedule.  The Lobos will have 12 games over 13 weeks, including two home games in September, one in October and three in November.

Overall the 2018 schedule is one of the most challenging in recent memory.  The home schedule is loaded with five winning programs, four bowl teams and three bowl champions. Overall, New Mexico will face eight bowl teams from 2017 and two teams that ended the 2017 season ranked.  UNM’s opponents’ overall record is 91-64, including 48-30 for UNM’s six home opponents and 47-20 among the five FBS opponents.  In fact, UNM is the only team in the league that will play all six league bowl teams from 2017.

With the release of the schedule, the Mountain West’s primary television partners CBS and ESPN will select games for broadcast, with the possibility of certain games being moved to Thursday or Friday, with kickoff times coming later.  Once CBS and ESPN finish their picks, third party rights holders, including AT&T Sports Network which has broadcast many Lobo games over the last few years, will be able to select games.

The non-conference schedule opens on September 1 with the first-ever meeting between New Mexico and Incarnate Word, an FCS school.  UNM then hits the road for a tough two-game road swing.  On September 8, UNM will take on Capital One Orange Bowl champion Wisconsin, which finished the year ranked No. 7 in the AP Poll.  The next week will see UNM travel to Las Cruces for the annual rivalry game with New Mexico State.

After a bye, UNM’s final non-conference game will be a September 29 meeting with Liberty.  Liberty went 6-5 last year, including a win at Baylor.

The conference schedule opens with back-to-back road games.  UNM will travel to take on UNLV on October 6, and then on October 13 UNM will take on Colorado State, Gildan New Mexico Bowl participants, in the first visit to CSU’s new on-campus stadium.

UNM’s home conference schedule opens October 20 with a meeting between the Lobos and Fresno State.  The Bulldogs won the Hawai’i Bowl 33-27 over Houston and won the West Division title in 2017.  UNM heads back on the road to close out October with a trip to Logan for a meeting with Utah State, who qualified for the Nova Home Loans Arizona Bowl.

November will see UNM play three of four at home.  San Diego State, one of four 10-win teams on the schedule, will come to Dreamstyle Stadium on November 3.  SDSU lost the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl to Army last year.  UNM’s final road game is at Air Force, the first trip to Colorado Springs since 2014.  The Lobos end the year with back-to-back home games.  On November 17, UNM hosts defending Mountain West champion Boise State.  The Broncos ended last year ranked No. 22 and defeated Oregon 38-28 in the Las Vegas Bowl.  Senior Day will be November 24 as UNM hosts the champions of the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, Wyoming.
