Lobos Ready for Tough Test at Tulsa

Listen to Lobo Talk | New Mexico Game Notes | Tulsa Game Notes

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Most quarterbacks have small, open barred face masks, allowing the quarterback to maximize vision without distraction.  Most quarterbacks aren’t the starting blockers on the kickoff team.  Coltin Gerhart isn’t most quarterbacks.  Entering the game at quarterback against Boise State after an injury to Lamar Jordan on a play ruled targeting, Gerhart, linebacker face mask an all, came in and performed well in his first quarterback action since 2013.  When he was in high school.

Since then, Gerhart spent three seasons at Arizona State, earning a very quick degree as a part time player for both football and baseball.  Now, he will be the starting quarterback for UNM’s Saturday game at the Tulsa Golden Hurricane in a game that can be seen on ESPN3.com and heard via the Lobo Radio Network, with kickoff at 12:35 Central Time, 11:35 a.m. Mountain Time.

Gerhart was 7-for-13 passing with a touchdown against Boise State in his first action, earning the praise from head coach Bob Davie.  “He came in late in the second quarter against Boise State and I thought played well,” said Davie.  “He’s a pretty cool customer.”

For the Lobos, they will playing the nation’s second-highest tempo offense in the nation, as Tulsa is averaging 92.7 plays per game, and well over 360 yards per game on the ground.  It should be an interesting test as UNM’s defense is ranked No. 7 nationally against the run, and Tulsa’s offense is third-best running the football.  “This is a different kind of running team than Boise State.  It’s a combination of in-your-face running with tempo, so I think we will know a lot more about our run defense after this week.”  However, Davie feels good about that side of the ball. “I’m encouraged that we took a Boise State playing at home … and allowed just 28 points.  There are a lot of signs there, but the true test is this week.”

Fans should look forward to the Lobo Game Day page on Saturday morning which will have all the links for fans to be able to watch or listen to the game, and fans can head to Kellys Brew Pub tonight and catch Head Coach Bob Davie at Lobo Talk tonight from 7-9 p.m.
