Jan Jorgensen joined the Lobo Football program in December of 2023, and he serves as the edge coach for UNM.  He comes to New Mexico after a serving as a defensive analyst at his alma mater of BYU.

A former star defensive lineman for the Cougars, Jorgensen brings a variety of experiences with him to UNM, having served as a line coach, a defensive coordinator and as an analyst..

The 2024 season will be his 4th working with Mendenhall.

PREVIOUS COACHING STOPS

BYU (2022-23)

Jorgensen spent two seasons with his alma mater in the role of defensive analyst.  As the D.A., Jorgensen aided the coaching staff in breaking down game film, scouting and analytics.

SNOW COLLEGE (2019-21)

Jorgensen was the defensive coordinator for Snow College in Ephraim, Utah.  While at Snow, the Badgers went 20-6 over his three seasons, allowing just 17.8 points per game over the three seasons.

Snow’s best year was 2020 when the team went 8-1, and defensively the 2021 team went 7-2 allowing just 13.7 points per game. That 2021 team totaled 28 sacks and 19 takeaways (12 interceptions and seven fumble recoveries.  Amazingly, the defense, while allowing just 123 points for the season, scored 42 as the defense had two interception returns for touchdowns (from 65 and 95 yards out) and four fumble returns for touchdowns (from 2, 28, 36, and 38 yards out).

ORANGE COAST COLLEGE (2018)

Jorgensen spent his first year as a full-time coach on the collegiate level as the defensive coordinator at Oregon Coast College.

BYU (2015-17)

Jorgensen got his collegiate coaching career off the ground at his alma mater, serving and a graduate assistant for the defense working with the edge players for three seasons, helping the Cougars to a pair of bowl appearances.

PLAYING CAREER: BYU (2006-09)

As a player, Jorgensen was a four-year starter, earning Third Team Freshman All-American from the Sporting News in 2006 and being named Honorable Mention All-America in 2007.  He was a three-time All-Mountain West Conference selection (2007, 2008, and 2009, leading the league in sacks with 13.5 in 2007.  He is still second all-time in Mountain West history for career sacks with 28.5 and he was BYU’s sack leader for three consecutive seasons from 2007-09.

He ranked No. 1 at BYU in career sacks since 2000 with 30, which is good for No. 2 all-time at BYU.  His 14 sacks in 2007 is the most by a Cougar in the 2000s, and overall he is second at BYU in career tackles for loss (since 2000) with 44, second at BYU in career quarterback hurries (since 2000) with 22 and tied for second at BYU in career fumble recoveries (since 2000) with six.

He earned a pair of degrees from BYU, earning a B.S. in social science in 2009 and a Master’s from the Marriott School of Business in 2017.

He is married to Ann Jorgensen, and together they have a daughter, Charlotte.
