New Mexico and VCU Announce Home-and-Home Series

by Steve Kirkland

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – New Mexico and VCU have announced an upcoming home-and-home series in men’s basketball over the 2024-25 and 2025-26 seasons. The Lobos and Rams will play this upcoming season on Dec. 18, 2024 at The Pit in Albuquerque and on a date to be determined in 2025-26 at the Siegel Center in Richmond, Va.

The games will be the first home games in the all-time series between the schools, with the only previous meeting coming in 2008-09, a 67-55 VCU victory in the opening round of the Cancun Classic in Mexico. This season’s game will mark VCU’s first trip to The Pit since the 1985 NCAA First and Second Rounds. Next season’s trip will be the Lobos’ first game at the Siegel Center and their first trip to Richmond since the 1996 NCAA First and Second Rounds at the Richmond Coliseum.

The Lobos are coming off a 2023-24 season that saw them post a 26-10 record and become the first team to win the Mountain West Championship by winning four games in four days. New Mexico made its first NCAA Tournament appearance in a decade in 2024, after playing in the NIT the season before.

VCU went 24-14 last season, reaching the championship game of the Atlantic 10 Tournament at the NIT quarterfinals under first-year head coach Ryan Odom, who took over the Rams after two seasons at Utah State. VCU has finished in the top 100 in KenPom in 17 of the past 18 seasons, making 12 NCAA Tournament appearances during that span, highlighted by the 2011 Final Four.
