First Place Lobos Host Two Key MW Matches Friday, Sunday

by Frank Mercogliano

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The adage is true, the more you win, the more important the matches get.

The 16-1. unbeaten in Mountain West play New Mexico Lobos have a pair of key home matches starting on Friday when they host the Nevad Wolf Pack at noon and then on Sunday when UNM hosts No. 65 San Diego State and the Mountain West schedule winds down.

The sites for the matches are slated for McKinnon, but if the weather is too windy, the matches will be moved indoors into the Linda Estes Tennis Bubbles.  Both matches are free to the public.

The Lobos have won back-to-back-back Mountain West Player of the Week awards for the first time in program history, and true to form, it was a different player each time.  Leonie Hoppe got it three weeks ago, Katherine Jhang eight days ago and Hsuan Huang on Wednesday.  It makes sense as seemingly UNM has had a different hero each week, as Sarah O’Connor and Maud Vandeputte could easily lay claim to a Player of the Week award for themselves.

After a 10-match streak to open the season, UNM has now won six straight.  Nevada is 8-7 overall and 2-3 in the Mountain West.  San Diego State is the only rankd tam in the league, checking in at No. 65.  It is 9-5 overall and 3-1 in the conference, but if it has an Achilles Heel, it’s the road where SDSU is just 1-4 on the year.
