McNeal Slated to Transfer from UNM

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Junior Chris McNeal of The University of New Mexico men’s basketball team has been granted release from the Lobos and is expected to transfer from UNM, the program announced Thursday. McNeal competed for the Lobos for just one season after transferring to UNM from Indian Hills Community College.

McNeal saw action in all 34 games for the Lobos last season, starting in 19, and averaged 9.5 points and 2.7 assists per game. He finished the season second on the team in assists with 93 and third in 3-pointers with 56. In addition, McNeal was third on the squad in minutes per game, averaging 24.5 per contest.

“Chris has truly been a great person to have in our program,” head coach Paul Weir said. “We wish him nothing but the best in his future.”

McNeal posted three 20+ point games this season including two in the first four games of the season against Northern New Mexico (24) and Tennessee Tech (29). In those games, he went a season-most 6-for-10 and 7-for-11 from 3-point range, respectively.

McNeal’s departure brings the 2018-19 Lobo roster closer to being finalized. Coach Weir will hold a press conference in the coming weeks to discuss roster changes, incoming players and more.
