Margaret Branch Gifts $30K to Women’s Cross Country

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — There have been a lot of great days for The University of New Mexico women’s cross country team lately, with two NCAA titles in the last three years and two USTFCCCA NCAA Division I Scholar Team of the Year.  Today will go down as another great day, and it’s due to the generosity of a life-long Lobo.

When Margaret Branch heard that the team needed $30,000 in funding to aid in the purchase of equipment, including treadmills, needed to maintain the high standards for the program, the longtime friend of the university and the athletic department stepped to give the team what it almost never needs; a little help crossing the finish line.

Branch, a member of the Lobo Champions Council and a longtime supporter of the university, has gifted the women’s cross country program $30,000 to purchase needed equipment and treadmills.  The gift will allow for UNM to make another serious run at a national title in 2018.

Joe Franklin, whose team has won 10 straight conference titles and who was named NCAA Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year, said “We would like to thank Margaret Branch for her very generous gift to purchase much needed equipment and treadmills.  Our goals have always been to compete at the highest level and have provide our students with first class opportunities both academically and athletically.  Mrs. Branch’s gift will allow us to continue to strive for those goals.”

“I want to thank Margaret on behalf of everyone in our department,” said Director of Athletics Eddie Nuñez.  “When the community stands behind us and supports us, it’s a great feeling for all of the student-athletes around our program.”

UNM was originally unsuccessful in requesting capital outlay to cover the expense, and that’s when Branch stepped in.  The key pieces of equipment needed are multiple treadmills for training and injury prevention.

“I saw a gap in funding,” said Margaret Branch, adding, “and I decided to fill it.  It was an honor to do so.  Thank you to the Lobo women’s cross country team and coach Joe Franklin for a great season.  Go Lobos!”
