Hernandez Tong Remains Undefeated at ITA All-American Championships

TULSA, Okla. — Three members of the University of New Mexico men’s tennis team have been competing at the 2017 ITA All-American Championships since Saturday, Sept. 30.  
 
Tim Buttner received his first two college wins of his career against two big Division I programs. He defeated Akos Kotorman of Baylor 6-7, 7-5, 6-3 in the Round of 256 and Stefano Tsorotiotis of Oklahoma 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 in Round of 128 of the pre-qualifying rounds on Saturday, Sept. 30. He was defeated by Tim Dollman of Alabama Birmingham 6-1, 6-2 in the Round of 64 on Sunday, Oct. 1.
 
On Sunday, Oct. 1, Ricky Hernandez Tong and Dominic West qualified in both singles and doubles of the main qualifying draw. They both competed in the first round of singles and Round of 64 in doubles.
 
Hernandez Tong and West teamed up for the qualifying doubles main draw but were defeated 6-3, 6-3 by Juan Carlos Aguilar and Jordi Arconada of Texas A&M on Monday, Oct. 2.

West fell to Valentine Vacherot of Texas A&M 7-6 (5), 6-4 in the first round of the qualifying singles also on Monday, Oct. 2.

Hernandez Tong remains undefeated in qualifying singles. He took down Jose Garcia of Florida State 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 in the first round of the singles main draw on Monday, Oct. 2. The next day, he faced off with Thomas Mayronne of South Carolina and defeated him 6-2, 7-6 (5) in the second round. He also defeated Duarte Vale of Florida 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in the third round on Tuesday, Oct. 3. He is set to play once again in the main draw on Thursday, Oct. 5; the draw will be posted later this evening.
 
“This has been a great week of tennis so far,” head coach Ben Dunbar said. “The three guys who came out here have really done the Lobo nation proud. All three showed improvements from previous matches I watched them play. We are excited to see Ricky compete this week in the main draw and to continue on our learning this fall. Go Lobos!”
