CRESWELL, Ore. –– The No. 20 New Mexico men’s golf team opened play Friday at the 2024 Mountain West Championship with the first round at the Emerald Valley Golf Club. The Lobos shot 2-under during the opening 18 holes to hold fifth place after the first day of the event.

San Diego State holds the first-round lead at 6-under, four shots ahead of the Lobos. Colorado State is second at 4-under, followed by Fresno State and Nevada tied for third at 3-under. Following the Lobos at 2-under are San Jose State and UNLV tied for sixth at 1-under, as the top seven teams are separated by five shots.

Carson Herron led the Lobos on the opening day, shooting a 2-under 70 to sit tied for seventh on the individual leaderboard. Bastien Amat, Albert Boneta and Matthew Watkins all shot even par 72, while Connor Adams rounded out the lineup with a first round 74.

“I am proud of how the guys battled on the back nine today,” said head coach Jake Harrington. “We didn’t play the front nine as well as we should, but we showed a lot of pride shooting 3-under par on the tougher side. We are in position going into the second round and I am looking forward to tomorrow.”

The Mountain West Championship continues Saturday and concludes Sunday at Emerald Valley Golf Club.
