Lobos Drop to No. 52 Denver

 ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— The No. 62 ranked University of New Mexico men’s tennis squad put up a hard fight to No. 52 Denver, but fell 5-2 in their last home match of the season.  The Lobos dropped the doubles point when they fell at one and two almost simultaneously. Bart Van Leijsen and Hayden Sabatka battled at the no. 1 position, but fell a 6-2 match. Right after, Ricky Hernandez-Tong and Jorge Escutia dropped 6-3.  At number three, Michael Tran and Rodolfo Jauregui led Zach Fryer and Diogo Rocha 4-3.  In singles play, Escutia and Jauregui dropped matches at the number three and five positions respectively to give the Pioneers a 3-0 lead.  Van Leijsen was first to put a point on the board for the Lobos when he defeated Rocha at the number two spot 6-3, 6-3 in two straight sets. Hernandez-Tong followed and won 6-4, 6-2 at the number four position.  Tran competed against Wyatt Lovera at the number six spot and he fell 6-3 in the first, but came back to win the second 6-2. However, he dropped the third set to clinch it for Denver. Sabatka took on Henry Craig at number one singles. He won 7-6 in the first set, but fell 6-4 in the second and third, setting Denver’s score at five.  The Lobos fell to 15-14 in their season. They will take on San Diego State on Wednesday in a make-up match in Las Vegas before the Mountain West Championships, hosted by UNLV, next week.
