Lobos Drop 4-3 Decision at UTRGV

EDINBURG, Texas — For the third time this season, the UNM women’s tennis team dropped a 4-3 match, this time at UTRGV, head coach Stephanie Wooten-Quijada’s former school. The loss dropped UNM to 3-6 on the season, while UTRGV improved to 7-8.
UNM lost the doubles point, dropping the first two matches, losing 6-2 at No. 3 doubles (Ruth Copas/Natasha Munday) and then losing at No. 1 6-3 (Hsiang-Wen “Albie” Huang/Danielle Quevedo). UNM was winning at No. 2 doubles, with Bronte Murgett and Diana Wong up 4-3 when the doubles point was secured.
All six singles matches were over in two sets. UNM won the first two when Huang took a win at No. 6 over Lasya Patnaik 6-1, 6-1 and then Murgett won at No. 2 singles 6-4, 6-4 over Marine Darzyan. UTRGV then bounced back to take a 3-2 lead when Dominique Ibarra defeated Diana Wong 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles and Dominique Esparza defeated Ruth Copas at No. 1 6-3, 6-3.
The match was turned even when Yue Lin “Polly” Chen won at No. 5 singles over Doris Aleksovska 6-4, 6-1, tying the match at 3-3. However, UTRGV claimed the win when Anastasia Belyaeva defeated Daniel Quevedo at No. 4 singles 6-3, 6-3.
UNM returns home for a pair of makeup dates. The Lobos host CSU-Pueblo on Tuesday at 9 a.m. before hosting Western New Mexico on Saturday at 1 p.m. Lobo fans can catch coach Wooten-Quijada and student-athletes DIana Wong, Bronte Murgett and Danielle Quevedo at Laguna Burger live from 7-8 p.m. tonight as they are the guests of a special women’s tennis episode of “Inside Athletics”.
