Lobo men's tennis Sweeps UTRGV in first season matchup

LUBBOCK, TEXAS —  The University of New Mexico men’s tennis team opened their season on Friday afternoon with an impressive sweep of the Vaqueros of University of Texas- Rio Grande Valley, 7-0.
 
In single’s play, No. 6 single’s Stepan Holis defeated UTRGV’s Mateo Schmit with an impressive score of 6-1, 6-1, followed by a Lobo victory by Bart Van Leijsen against Yehonatan Kaufman for the No. 2 single’s point, with a final score of 6-1, 6-3. In the No. 4 single’s flight, UNM’s Tim Buttner also defeated UTRGV’s Elliot Johnstone in two, with a final score of 6-4, 6-4, putting the Vaqueros out of reach for the victory.
 
 In the No. 5 single’s flight, UNM’s Jorge Escutia beat UTRVG’s Zane Kohrs, 6-3, 6-4. In the No. 3 single’s flight, UNM’s Dominic West beat UTRGV’s Dennis Boisseau 6-0 in the first set, and fell to Boisseau in the second, 5-7. In the match-determining set, West was able to best Boisseau, 10-5. UNM’s No. 1 single’s Ricky Hernandez-Tong also bested UTRGV’s Koby Jansen, 6-3, 6-4.
 
The Lobos also emerged victorious in doubles play, with both the duo of Ricky Hernandez-Tong and Dominic West defeating Dennis Boisseau and Koby Jansen, and Tim Buttner and Sean Baklini defeating Michael Loyd and Zane Kohrs, both with 6-3 scores.
 
“It was a great start to the season; the guys played pretty well, but the main thing was that our competitive spirit was right today,” Head Coach Ben Dunbar said. ” That will be our goal all year: compete hard and represent Lobo Nation. Now,  we move onto tomorrow with a great match against Texas Tech.”

The Lobos will have their second day of play tomorrow, Sun. Jan. 21, as they face the Raiders of Texas Tech at 6:30 p.m.
